Michael Mutzel to become sporting director at HSV

The current head scout of TSG Hoffenheim will become the sporting director at HSV from 1st April.

From 1st April, HSV will have a sporting director. Head of sport Ralf Becker has agreed a contract with Michael Mutzel, who is the current head scout of TSG Hoffenheim, with the real running until 2021. “We will face great challenges in the coming months and years and we want to be in the best position possible, to tackle the upcoming tasks,” explained Becker. Mutzel has already worked in various positions and roles in football clubs. “We want to broaden our horizons. He will strengthen us and share his experiences with us,” said Becker. 

“Exciting and big challenges”

The 39-year-old will be responsible for everything to do with the Bundesliga, youth teams and scouting system alongside Ralf Becker. He also has an A coaching license. As a footballer, he played as a defensive midfielder for Eintracht Frankfurt (1998-2002), VfB Stuttgart (2002-2004) and Karlsruher SC (2004-2011). He made 92 appearances in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, scoring once in the Bundesliga and four times in the second tier. He also won Bundesliga 2 with Karlsruher SC. He retired as a footballer in 2012 and became a youth coach at TSG Hoffenheim. He then became head of the youth academy. From 2014-2015, he was the director of professional football at Greuther Fürth. Since 2016, he has been the head scout at TSG Hoffenheim.

The future sporting director is looking forward to the upcoming challenges. “We had positive and very constructive discussions, which gave me a very good feeling about the developments that are to come. I consider my upcoming at HSV an exciting and great challenge. I can’t wait to get involved.”
