Terodde double fires HSV to opening day win
Simon Terodde opened his account for the season with two well-taken goals on Friday night.
Hamburger SV put their cup defeat behind them with an enterprising performance against Fortuna Düsseldorf, to win the 2. Bundesliga curtain raiser by two goals to one on Friday (18th September) at the Volksparkstadion. The home side started the game strongly but were only rewarded for their promising start in first-half injury time thanks to Simon Terodde's first strike of the campaign. The 33-year-old doubled his tally for the season on the hour and despite a late push from Fortuna, the Rothosen were able to see the game home for their first three points of the season.
Terodde slots in first of the season
Daniel Thioune made four changes to the starting line-up after the 4-1 loss in Dresden on Monday night, handing first starts in a HSV shirt to new signing Moritz Heyer, as well as Amadou Onana in central midfield and Simon Terodde up front. Stephan Ambrosius also passed a late fitness test to start at centre-back. The Rothosen started the stronger of the two teams, as new signing Heyer headed into the side netting after Kastenmeier had misjudged an early corner, before the Fortuna 'keeper atoned for his earlier error with a smart reflex save when the ball fell kindly to Jeremy Dudziak all of six yards out. Dudziak fashioned another chance to test Kastenmeier in the 18th minute after a surging run down the left, before the bright start from the hosts subsided and the guests gained a foothold in the game.
Despite seeing more of the ball, only Fortuna captain Rouwen Hennings had a clear sight of goal for the guests, blasting well over from a tight angle in the 26th minute. As the half-time whistle approached, the pressure from the hosts increased again, Simon Terodde imposing himself on the Fortuna defence and holding the ball up with aplomb. Just as it looked like the first half would end goalless, a HSV corner wasn't cleared properly and Jeremy Dudziak got to the bouncing ball before Florian Hartherz, who caught the 25-year-old in the process. Whilst Kastenmeier guessed the direction from the resulting penalty, Terodde struck it firmly enough for it to nestle in the goal to give the Rothosen a lead that was marginally deserved on the balance of play.
Dudziak the creator again as Terodde seals the deal
The second half started energetically, as both teams looked to catch their opponent out on the break, with a number of promising situations breaking down at the last due to an imprecise pass or cross. A poor touch from Manuel Wintzheimer led to a 3-on-2 break ending in disappointment for the Rothosen, but a similar fast counter was used to deadly effect a few minutes later on the hour mark. Jeremy Dudziak drove at the Fortuna backline, and exchanged passes with the overlapping Tim Leibold before chipping to the back post where Simon Terodde was waiting to gobble up his second of the evening with a simple header from all of three yards out.
After the Hamburg second, the game was punctuated by periods of Düsseldorf possession, which invariably broke down and led to counter-attacks from the hosts. Heading into the final 10 minutes, the pressure increased from the relegated Bundesliga team, as first Tim Leibold selflessly threw himself in front of Rouwen Henning's rasping half-volley and from the resulting corner Daniel Heuer Fernandes was brought into action for the first time in the second half with Kevin Danso's header. In a frantic finish to the game, first Opoku Ampomah was given his marching orders after kicking the ball away in frustration in the first minute of extra time and seeing his second yellow card of the game. No sooner had that happened, and the guests had pulled one back, as one of many injury-time corners was cleared to Zimmermann on the edge of the area, who rifled into the bottom left-hand corner. It proved to be too little, too late for Fortuna, who failed to truly threaten the Hamburg goal until the closing stages and had to leave Hamburg empty-handed. Daniel Thioune will be hoping for a repeat against the other side relegated from the Bundesliga next time out in Paderborn, on Monday 28th September (kick-off 8:30pm).
