Jonas David extends contract with HSV until 2024
The under-20 international, who has been at the club since 2014 and was most recently on loan at Würzburger Kickers, has extended his contract, which would have expired next summer, by three additional years.
Josha Vagnoman, Aaron Opoku and now Jonas David; Hamburger SV continues its strategy of focussing in the future on young, developing players, tying Jonas David to a three-year contract extension which keeps the central defender at the Volksparkstadion until 2024. 20-year-old David is now the third academy graduate, after Vagnoman and Opoku, to have extended their contract early this year, with the triplet remaining at HSV until 2024.
"Achieved consistent development"
HSV sporting director Michael Mutzel was particularly pleased to reach an agreement with the Hamburg native, who was loaned out to Würzburger Kickers during the second half of the season, and started four games for the promoted side before a muscle injury. “We’re very happy that with Jonas we can tie another talented youngster to the club long-term. In the past few years, Jonas has shown consistent development. He was one of the key players in his team all the way through our academy and successfully completed his first steps for the first team in the past two seasons. During his recent spell at Würzburger Kickers in the 3. Liga, he displayed the potential that he has and that he can develop into a dependable player at professional level. We want to support him as best we can in the next few years and continue to further develop the skills he already has at his disposal.”
The youngster was thrilled by the trust placed in him by the club: “I’m very pleased that I will continue to be a part of the HSV family for the years ahead. As a Hamburg native, HSV is a special club for me. I want to take the next steps here and establish myself at the professional level. I know that this next step will only be achieved through hard work and therefore am highly motivated going into the preparation for next season.”
Jonas David was born on the 8th March 2000 in Hamburg and began his footballing career in the youth teams of Meiendorfer SV, in the north-east of the city. Having also played for Eintracht Norderstedt, the then-14-year-old joined the HSV academy in the 2014/15 season, moving through the Rothosen’s youth set-up. On the 3rd August 2018, David celebrated his first-team debut during the Rothosen’s 3-0 defeat to Holstein Kiel on the opening day of the 2. Liga season, showing his adaptability, playing in central defence and defensive midfield. In the 2019/20 season, the four-time German under-20 international was in the matchday squad twelve times, and made his third and at this moment in time last appearance for the Rothosen on Matchday 12 during the 1-1 draw in Wiesbaden. David joined third-division side Würzburger Kickers on loan in the January transfer window, making five appearances before a muscle injury interrupted his progress.
