“It’s a disappointing draw”
A game of two halves resulted in a draw in the match between traditional clubs HSV and Schalke 04. Here is the Rothosen’s match reaction.
Marco Richter: It’s a disappointing draw. Of course I’m pleased to have scored my first goal for HSV, but we’re only coming away with a draw today, which is very bitter to take. We were so dominant in the first half, got two goals in front and were in good spirits. We also didn’t make a bad start to the second half, but then we allowed ourselves to be penned in. We gave away the first goal ourselves, and then their second came whilst they were applying the pressure. We need to accept responsibility for not scoring a third goal earlier.
Davie Selke: It’s difficult to find an explanation for a game like this so soon after full-time. We spent a lot of time on our strategy this week and were implementing it exactly as we wished to in the first half. Our recent approach has been to be braver when playing at home, to put the opposition under more stress. We need to ask a lot of questions of ourselves as to why we became so passive in phases of the second half. We wanted to come out for the second half with the same energy we had shown in the first. Evidently, we were unsuccessful in doing this. Our clear ambition is to win our home games, so we’re disappointed and can also understand the disappointment of the fans when the final whistle blew.
"It was a game of two halves."
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: The first half wasn’t a coincidence. We did a lot of things well and correctly. We played Schalke exactly how we planned to play them. However, it’s true that we stopped doing this in the second half. We didn’t have enough of the ball and weren’t moving around enough. Then, the opposition came back into it and took their chances. It wasn’t enough from us in the second half. We need to act more calmly in these situations, play a more active role in the game and be more confident on the ball.
Steffen Baumgart: We did lots of things well in the first half, created good chances and took a 2-0 half-time lead. The lads started the second half well, and we had a real chance for 3-0. Then, we had a poor phase as Schalke improved. We conceded an unfortunate goal to make it 2-1 and then we became less sure of ourselves. This meant we weren’t able to bring the win over the line, even though we had further chances at the end. Therefore, we’re disappointed.
Kees van Wonderen: It was a game of two halves. The first was difficult for us, conceding twice in quick succession and our errors playing a big part in that. There was a very emotional reaction from the team at half-time. Therefore, I’m proud of how we reacted on the pitch in the second half and were able to level the game in the end.
