“It was a very mature performance”
HSV ran out as 4-1 winners against Fortuna Düsseldorf in front of a sold-out crowd at the Volksparkstadion and put in not only an impressive, but also incredibly mature performance, which led to a well-deserved home win. Read what the happy head coach and players had to say after the game here.
Davie Selke: It was a dominant display today. We managed to maintain this level for a very long stretch of time and made it tough to beat us. Even after the opposition scored, we stuck to our game plan, had the chance to show what we can do up front and defended really, really well on the whole. Everything fell into place for my goal – it was a set-piece routine that we’ve rehearsed. Overall, it was a very good, dominant, and controlled performance and our exceptional fans made it a special home game.
Daniel Elfadli: We’re happy with the win and that we could do what we set out to do. It wasn’t just a hard-fought victory, but also well-executed, well-structured and well-planned, since we implemented it well and it worked out amazingly. We, as a team, and the fans who brought so much energy showed again today how formidable HSV are. It’s hard for every team to come here to the Volksparkstadion and get a result.
“We’ve got a good mixture of defence and attack at the moment” - Ludovit Reis
Jonas Meffert: I had a feeling yesterday that the whole team would be ready. It was important to us to come back and react well after the setback against Paderborn. We managed to do that with the fans behind us. The atmosphere was incredible, and it was incredibly fun to play football here today. Evening games just seem to suit us – it was a top performance, and throughout the game, I was convinced we had what it takes to win this game.
Ludovit Reis: We played well and I’m happy that I could play my part in the win. I’m feeling good and back to being 100% fit after my injury. The fans cheering so loudly when I came on showed me once again that we’re all a big family here at HSV. I don’t just want to talk about me, though, rather I want to talk about the team. In our ranks, we’ve got a good mixture of defence and attack at the moment. Now, we’ve got to take it step by step, game by game. As a team, we believe in ourselves.
Adam Karabec: Again, we had unbelievable support from the fans today, who fired us up the whole time. It was the reason why we put in such a good, dominant performance. We didn’t allow ourselves to be fazed by Düsseldorf’s goal and continued to play the way that we stick to under the coach. It’s nice that we were able to score a lot of goals again and make the fans happy as a result. Now, it’s a case of taking it step by step.
"We didn’t want to settle, rather go for a third goal" - Merlin Polzin
Merlin Polzin: We put in a very mature, dominant performance today. We started the game well and did a lot of the things we set out to do. Time and again, we managed to strike a balance between controlling the game and defending or shutting down the chances that Fortuna created. With Miro’s goal we managed to take control of the game with our confidence. With Fortuna’s goal, you could see how clinical Düsseldorf are and why they’re in the mix at the top of the table. They deserved to equalise. After that, we managed to continue playing our way and were awarded set-pieces as a result. At half time, we set ourselves the task of sticking to our game over the whole 90 minutes. We didn’t want to settle, rather go for a third goal. It was more than deserved come the end of the game.
Daniel Thioune: It was a more than deserved victory for HSV. It was obvious that my side didn’t bring the quality you need to get a result in Hamburg today. You’ve got to admit that they applied a lot of pressure from the outset. The standard peaked when they went 1-0 up. It was a great goal from Miro Muheim. We got back in the game from one moment. After that, we went behind again from a set piece. We just didn’t perform as I would’ve liked up front today. Over the whole 90 minutes, we didn’t exert enough pressure to come away with a result here today.
