“We wanted to win more than anything”
After the 2-1 win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the Rothosen were full of praise regarding their overall display, as well as the vital double save by goalkeeper Matheo Raab and subsequent counter attack that initiated the winning goal.
Sebastian Schonlau: We were definitely the stronger side, but that’s not important. In the past, there have been games where we’ve played well but given away the lead right at the end, but that didn’t happen today. It was plain to see that we wanted to win more than anything, particularly when “Matze” put in a great save and started the counter attack which led to the opening goal. That being said, we didn’t have as much control over the game as we would have liked, and allowed them to counter attack on a few too many occasions.
Lukasz Poreba: It was great for me to have scored today, but winning the game made it that little bit better, because we really needed the three points. I worked hard to get picked for the starting line-up. I’m thrilled that it paid off to be honest, as I was able to score in our home ground in front of our fans.
Laszlo Benes: The draw against Fürth felt like a defeat, which made today’s win feel even better and more meaningful. We had to show a reaction to last weekend. We’re aware that every point counts that little bit more now, and we gave it our all on the pitch today, so it feels great come away with all three points. I’m thrilled that I was able to help the team out with my goal. We are still a number of points away from the top of the table. After we scored the opener, we lost some control of the game and didn’t have as much of a presence, which is something we have to get better at. Matheo did really well at stopping them from taking the lead and was quick to initiate the counter attack. That was exceptional.
Matheo Raab: Winning the game was the most important thing today. We deserved to come out on top, despite the minor setbacks and blow of the equaliser just before half time. After the break, we started to have more success going forward and defended well for the rest of the game. For me, this match was different, but I approached it as if it were like any other. I think I did that pretty well.
Steffen Baumgart: We won 2-1 and are pleased to have taken all three points. We had a lot of good chances again, including the two shots that hit the post, and could have sealed the win earlier on. Kaiserslautern did really well and took advantage of the odd sloppy moments we had. Our lads fought hard and got really stuck in. In Matheo Raab, we’ve got a great goalkeeper who played well today. However, I saw lots of things that we can improve on, but I also saw a number of positives, particularly from a defensive perspective.
Friedhelm Funkel: It’s hard to find the right words. We played really well and you couldn’t tell that we’d had a tough cup game in Saarbrücken just three days ago. I’m really pleased with my team’s performance overall. It gives me hope and belief that we’ll pick up the points we need from our remaining games. The way we play is most the important thing for me and we performed well today. I told the team that in the huddle right after the game. We’ve definitely progressed.
