HSV suffer tough 2-1 defeat in Regensburg
Hamburger SV were beaten 2-1 by SSV Jahn Regensburg on Sunday. Die Rothosen finished the game with nine men, after Orel Mangala and Vasiljie Janjicic picked up second-half red cards.
HSV fell to defeat at the hands of SSV Jahn Regensburg in Matchday 23. Die Rothosen opened the scoring in the 16th minute through centre-back David Bates’ first goal of the season, and had two good chances to increase the lead further but were unable to capitalise. Orel Mangala’s 69th minute dismissal for a second bookable offence was shortly followed by a Regensburg equaliser thanks to a strike from Adamyan (74’). The home side completed the turnaround and took the lead through Grüttner only minutes later (81’). Things went from bad to worse for Die Rothosen when Janjicic was awarded a straight red card for a professional foul in the 92nd minute.
An early lead...
Head coach Hannes Wolf made two changes to the side that drew 2-2 in Heidenheim. First team regulars Sakai and Douglas returned to the side from suspension and injury respectively. Left back Douglas had an instant impact – the Brazilian’s dangerous free-kick wasn’t properly dealt with by the home side and centre-back Bates found space to finish from close range. The goal - Bates’ first of the season - marked a deserved lead for the visitors. HSV were hunting for a second, the pace of wingers Jatta and Hwang a constant threat. It was the latter who created a great chance to double the lead, but striker Lasogga was unable to find the target in the 30th minute, meaning HSV took a narrow lead into half-time.
... and a tough ending
The second half told a different story to the first. Jahn Regensburg increased pressure higher up the field, and the momentum swung in their favour following Orel Mangala’s dismissal for handball in the 69th minute. As a result, the HSV defence were put under increasingly more pressure and the equaliser came soon after in the 74th minute. Adamyan, who scored a hat-trick in the reverse fixture, put his side level and the home fans found their voice. With the bit between their teeth and a man advantage, Regensburg began to control the game inside the HSV half. In the 81st minute Grüttner made the advantage count, as Regensburg took the lead for the first time. The hosts continued in search of goals and almost found a third, but the only other key incident was a second red card for Die Rothosen, as referee Zwayer gave substitute Janjicic his marching orders for a professional foul in the 92nd minute, ensuring a frustrating day all round.
