HSV lose 3-1 at Eintracht Braunschweig
Although they hit the woodwork three times at the end of the game, HSV had been second best up to then and suffered a 3-1 defeat at the Eintracht-Stadion on Friday evening.
Hamburger SV suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday evening (8th November) at a sold-out Eintract-Stadion. The visitors were the first to rejoice when Heuer Fernandes saved a Braunschweig penalty (25’), but they went on to concede three goals from Philippe (35’, 65’) and Di Michele Sanchez (49’) and were trailing too far behind when they launched their final offensive. Despite Poreba getting a goal back to make it 3-1 (73’) and Stange and Selke being denied by the woodwork three times, it wasn’t enough for HSV to take anything away from the game.
HSV invite Braunschweig on...
Head coach Steffen Baumgart was able to recall the experienced Schonlau and Meffert, who had recently been out due to suspension. However, it was midfield maestro and Mr. Reliable Meffert who lost the ball in the 35th minute which put teammate Schonlau in a difficult position before he was bested in a one-on-one situation by double goalscorer Philippe as the visitors conceded first.
It had been a balanced game up until the goal: both teams were going strong into the tackle and there were lots of direct duels. The teams also had their fair share of big chances. Following some great combination play with Selke, Königsdörffer found himself with a huge chance to open the scoring in the fourth minute, but he was denied by ex-HSV keeper Johansson. After Katterbach fouled Köhler to concede a 25th-minute penalty, Heuer Fernandes stepped up to save Gomez’ spot-kick and keep the scores level. Therefore, Hamburger SV’s faux pas in the build-up caused the key moment in the first half, as the away side fell behind shortly before the break.
...and leave it too late
The second half began as poorly as the first one ended for HSV. The visitors came under pressure after the second half kicked off and had to contend with two or three difficult moments before they conceded a second goal, scored in spectacular fashion by substitute Di Michele Sanchez from more than 20 metres out. About a quarter of an hour later, Philippe finished off a counterattack to score his second and Braunschweig’s third, which made it seem as though the hosts were out of sight.
However, HSV were determined to not give up. They increased the pressure on their opponents once again, putting Eintracht under stress and getting one back through Poreba, which led to a wild end to the match. 17-year-old HSV youngster Stange made his first-team debut off the bench, and two minutes later, his first shots struck first the post and then the bar (82’). The guests’ woodwork misfortune continued with Selke, as his header crashed against the post, which meant that nothign more became of the Rothosen’s glimpse at a comeback, and ultimately, given a poor first 70 minutes, it was not an undeserved 3-1 defeat against Eintracht Braunschweig.
