HSV emerge victorious in a 2-1 win over Kaiserslautern
HSV beat 1. FC Kaiserslautern 2-1 at the Volksparkstadion, courtesy of goals from Benes (34’) and Poreba (60’). Although Ache was able to equalise just before the break (45’ +1), the hosts emerged victorious from the clash on matchday 28.
On Saturday afternoon, Hamburger SV came out on top in a 2-1 win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern in front of a sold-out Volksparkstadion of 57,000 fans. Both sides created numerous chances in the first half, but Benes was the one to step up and open the scoring for the hosts with a first-time finish in the 34th minute. Nevertheless, FCK continued to apply the pressure and found the equaliser through Ache just prior to the break (45’ +1). The sides were level pegging at half time, but Poreba came to HSV’s rescue and found the back of the net in the 60th minute to reclaim their lead. The HSV defence then tightened up and the visitors were unable to find any gaps following the second goal, meaning the home side could pick up all three important points from the clash in their quest for promotion.
Lots of chances, but only two goals
HSV head coach Steffan Baumgart made three changes to the line-up from last weekend’s 1-1 draw with SpVgg Greuther Fürth for the clash against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, which saw left-back Katterbach replace Muheim, who is currently suspended. Additionally, Jatta and Pherai both started the game on the bench, meaning midfielders Suhonen and Poreba were called into action for the side. Both teams got off to a flying start and had chances early on, which saw Ache (4’) and Benes (6’) nod the ball just wide of their respective targets just minutes apart from each other. The hosts seized control of the game after that, and had yet another clear-cut chance through captain Schonlau, whose header effort narrowly missed the net (10’). The visitors responded and created a number of goalscoring opportunities from set pieces through Opoku (11‘), Puchacz (12‘), and Ache (26‘), all of which were unsuccessful.
HSV’s keeper was forced to step up not long after when Richmond Tachie pulled the trigger from twelve metres out, but Raab got low quickly and cleared the danger for the hosts (27’). Benes then got in on the action with a first-time hit in the direction of FCK’s net, but his strike was denied by the woodwork (31’). However, the Slovakian’s efforts were finally rewarded and luck was on his side when a save from Kaiserslautern’s keeper fell to his feet, and the striker could slot it home on his first touch to open the scoring. Just when HSV thought they would have the advantage heading into the break, FCK had other ideas. The visitors regained possession in the middle and combined down the left before squaring it into Opoku on the back post, where the unmarked striker ran onto the ball and found the back of the net (45’ +1).
Poreba nets the winner for HSV
Steffan Baumgart decided to make one change to his side at half time, which saw Jatta come off the bench for Suhonen. The Gambian immediately got in on the action and was inches away from getting on the end of a Benes free kick, which hit the woodwork yet again (49’). HSV applied pressure in the FCK box after Poreba’s header from another Benes free kick narrowly went wide of the right post (54’). Despite the hosts’ best efforts to take back their lead, Kaiserslautern put Raab through his paces and forced the keeper to pull off an impressive double save against Toure after his first stop fell back at the defender’s feet. HSV were then able to counter attack thanks to Matheo’s quick reflexes, and Nemeth pulled the trigger up the other end, but his effort was not cleared sufficiently and fell to the feet of Poreba on the edge of the box. The 24-year-old struck home HSV’s second with a left-footed volley (60’), and the Volksparkstadion went wild.
The game’s momentum swung back and forth following the goal, with both head coaches immediately turning to their benches, before going on to make further changes in the following stages. However, both sides struggled to maintain the game’s intensity initially following these substitutions. After coming into action shortly prior, Dompe was involved in the game’s next noteworthy attempt in the 83rd minute with a display of impressive individual skill, but Himmelmann denied him with a diving save. The visitors put in a final push to try and break through the HSV defence, but were unsuccessful in doing so and the game ended 2-1 after five minutes of added time.
