HSV and Meffert gear up for milestone match in Düsseldorf
HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart has made his vision for the rest of the season clear, as he remarked that there are ten games left for him and his side to achieve their main aim of getting promoted to the Bundesliga together. The first of those remaining matches will take place in Düsseldorf this weekend and is sure to be a special occasion for one HSV player.
Jonas Meffert was just as exhausted and disappointed as the rest of the Rothosen when the final whistle blew, signalling a 2-1 defeat against strugglers VfL Osnabrück on Sunday afternoon. Instead of gathering more positive momentum, HSV spurned the chance to capitalise on results around them going their way and were left empty-handed after the clash at the Volksparkstadion. The fact that Meffert was a key component of the Rothosens’ build-up play throughout the game was no consolation for the midfielder. On Monday, he and his teammates went over the game alongside the coaching staff, with the aim of having clear heads to focus on the upcoming challenges from Tuesday onwards.
The team will need to cast the loss out of their minds as quickly as possible, as there is little time for them to lick their wounds before their next outing at Fortuna Düsseldorf. The Rothosens’ first chance at redemption will come just five days after that bitter home defeat against VfL. The game will be a particularly special occasion for Meffert, as it will mark his 100th competitive game in HSV colours.
“For me, it’s really something special to have played so many games for this unique club”
“For me, it’s really something special to have played so many games for this unique club,” said the 29-year-old, who has been a fixture in the centre of HSV’s midfield since 2021 and boasts a total of 233 appearances in the second tier. That experience will see him play an important role in helping the Rothosen get back on track as quickly as possible. As head coach Steffen Baumgart highlighted following his side’s 2-1 defeat against Osnabrück, there are still ten games remaining to secure the points necessary to achieve promotion. Düsseldorf, then, is the first of ten stops on the path to the Bundesliga, and therefore represents a crucial game not just for Meffert, but for the whole team.
