HSV add competition for number 1 jersey with Sven Ulreich
The 32-year-old goalkeeper moves up north from Bayern Munich and signs a three-year contract in Hamburg.
After the departure of Julian Pollersbeck to Lyon, Hamburger SV have strengthened the goalkeeping contingent once again with the signing of Sven Ulreich from Bayern Munich. Two days before the end of the transfer window, the 32-year-old signed a contract until the 30th June 2023 at the Volksparkstadion, having completed his medical on Saturday morning (3rd October) at the university hospital in Eppendorf. Ulreich had been at the Bavarian giants since the summer of 2015, winning thirteen titles including the triple in the 2019/20 season.
“It was clear that we wanted to add another goalkeeper to the team after the departure of Julian Pollersbeck. We are happy that we’ve managed to do that successfully with the signing of Sven Ulreich,” said Head of Sport Jonas Boldt to the signing of the ‘keeper, who has played 221 times in the Bundesliga. “Sven is an experienced goalkeeper who has shown in the past few years that you can still continue to develop at an advanced age. He has had five successful years with Bayern Munich, winning many titles. With him we have another pillar in the team, helping us to achieve our goals, develop the younger players in the team and emanate professionalism to the rest of the squad.” Ulreich himself is looking forward to getting started: “I have been in contact with HSV for the past few weeks. After discussions with Jonas Boldt and Michael Mutzel, I had a very good feeling and really wanted to make that step. For that reason, I’m even more thrilled that Bayern agreed to the move yesterday and I’m now here at HSV. I’m a very loyal and ambitious player and want to deploy these attributes to the best of my ability within the team.”
Sven Ulreich was born on the 3rd August 1988 in Schorndorf in the southern state of Baden-Württemberg, and joined the academy at VfB Stuttgart at the tender age of nine. Ulreich moved through the youth set-up at the Swabian club, making his Bundesliga debut on the 9th February 2008 in a 3-1 loss to Hertha BSC. 219 competitive games followed before a move to Munich in the summer of 2015, fulfilling the role of back-up for Manuel Neuer and making 70 appearances in total for Bayern. Due to his impressive performances whilst Neuer was injured towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign, Ulreich was called up to the German national squad for the first time, but didn’t make an appearance. The 32-year-old will wear the number 26 for HSV.
