Lacklustre Hamburg suffer early cup exit in Dresden
Dynamo Dresden powered past HSV in the DFB Pokal on Monday night, scoring two goals in both halves to advance to the second round.
Hamburger SV started the season in the worst possible way on Monday night (14th September), unable to contend with the energy and power of Dynamo Dresden, eventually losing by four goals to one at the Rudolf Harbig Stadion to exit the DFB Pokal at the first hurdle. Dresden were rewarded for an energetic start to the season, putting their guests under pressure from the first whistle and racing into a two-goal lead inside the first 16 minutes. Christoph Daferner extended Dynamo's lead shortly after half-time, effectively ending the game as a contest, with Onana for HSV and Mai for the Saxons opening their accounts for the season in the closing stages, as the Black and Yellows managed to keep their guests at arm's length for the entirity.

Dresden pressure leads to early double for hosts
Daniel Thioune changed things up for his first competitive game in charge, ditching the three-at-the-back system which had brought success against Feyenoord and Hertha, opting instead for a classic four-at-the-back with Toni Leistner and Jonas David as a centre-back partnership. The 46-year-old's reign got off to the worst possible start, as the home side took the lead inside the first three minutes. Jeremy Dudziak lost the ball on the halfway line, and the Black and Yellows broke quickly, Weihrauch sprinting down the left-hand side and crossing into the middle where Stark was waiting to place past Heuer Fernandes expertly on the half-volley. A frenetic opening to the game saw a host of chances for both sides in the first 10 minutes of the new season, with the hosts in particular looking to pressure their guests early and sharply. The Saxon side were rewarded for their bright start with a second in the 16th minute, hurrying and hassling Lukas Hinterseer high up the pitch who gave the ball away under pressure. Robin Becker made the most of the situation, striding into the penalty area and firing past Heuer Fernandes from the right-hand edge of the box thanks to a deflection from the covering Jonas David.
The game lost an amount of energy after the Dresden second, as the hosts relented with the pressure somewhat, unable to maintain the persistent pressing of the opening quarter of an hour. The Rothosen were seeing a large amount of the ball, as much as 70% at one point in the half, but were lacking the pace on the ball to stretch the massed Dresden defensive lines. Lukas Hinterseer had the two best chances for the guests in the first period in the space of two minutes close to the half-time whistle. The second saw a sweeping counter end with Sonny Kittel on the left-hand edge of the area, pulling back to the Austrian striker eight yards out who managed to slide the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy. As it was the hosts entered the break with a deserved two-goal lead.

Daferner finishes off Hamburg with long-range strike
The Rothosen came out of the break unchanged and with a more positive attitude, starting the half on the front foot but with little goalmouth action to show for it. Instead, Dynamo added a third with their first meaningful attack after the interval in the 53rd minute. Will was allowed to advance far too easily down the Dresden left-hand side, picking out Daferner in the middle who was also gifted time and space to pick his spot, something the 22-year-old did with aplomb, rifling his right-footed effort from all of 25 yards past an off-guard Daniel Heuer Fernandes.
A triple change from Daniel Thioune followed on the hour mark but changed little on the pitch. The Rothosen still saw a lot of the ball but were unable to truly threaten the Dresden backline for a sustained period. Khaled Narey hammered against the woodwork in the 68th minute with a left-footed drive from inside the area, one of few moments of incision from the guests. Kevin Broll's clean sheet lasted until the 88th minute, as Tim Leibold's cross was flicked on by Simon Terodde and nodded in at the back post by substitute Amadou Onana for a goal on his debut. It was ultimately only a consolation, as the final action of the game saw Leistner handle Horvath's cross, and Dresden captain Mai smashed home the resulting penalty in the fifth minute of injury time. The Rothosen will have to pick themselves up to go again on Friday (kick-off 6:30pm CET) against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the 2. Bundesliga curtain raiser.
