2-1 opening-night victory at 1. FC Köln
Die Rothosen made a very good start to the 2024/25 season, emerging 2-1 victors in the Bundesliga 2 curtain raiser against relegated side Köln courtesy of a Königsdörffer brace.
Hamburger SV won 2-1 in their first league match of the new season away to 1. FC Köln. A first-half Königsdörffer brace left the away side in a great position at the sold-out Rheinenergie-Stadion this Friday evening (2nd August), but they did have to work hard to see out the three points against a Köln side who put in a spirited performance from the first to the last whistle. Maina halved the deficit in the 83rd minute, which made it a tense end to the game for Steffen Baumgart’s side, but HSV saw the job out and ensured a successful start to the new campaign.
Königsdörffer at the double...
Steffen Baumgart lined his team up in a 3-2-4-1 formation to begin with, with wingers Jatta and Dompe dropping deep into the back line when Köln were in possession. The enthusiastic home crowd saw their team enjoy the majority of the ball in the first few minutes, because Köln came out flying and had two good chances through Huseinbasic and Ljubicic. However, it would be HSV who would open the scoring from their first venture forward of the night in the sixth minute. Köln keeper Urbig let go of a Dompe effort, and Königsdörffer reacted sharply to poke it home from close range for 1-0. This did not go down well with the hosts, who continued to get forward and apply pressure on the HSV defence, who, in response, remained strong and ready to launch a counterattack. This led to chances for both Königsdörffer and Dompe, before a further attack in the 35th minute led to the guests’ second goal of the night. Die Rothosen worked it up the left wing before Karabac delivered a perfect cross to Königsdörffer; after his header struck the crossbar, he remained as alert as he did by his first goal and slotted home the rebound. This second goal proved to have a considerable impact on the Köln side, who surrendered control of the game to HSV. However, Heuer Fernandes was called into action in first-half injury time, making a crucial stop from Lemperle’s close-range effort and keeping the score at 2-0 going into the break.
...and HSV pick up the first three points of the season
HSV had to endure a tough second half, in which they attempted to see out their lead. 1. FC Köln came out for the second half with real enthusiasm and wanted to let their guests know that they will be giving in their all to find a way back into this game, which is exactly what they did. Several crosses were whipped into Daniel Heuer Fernandes’ box, but the HSV defence, who had dropped a little deeper, were defending the majority of them well. On the occasion that a threatening pass got in behind them, captain Schonlau was on hand to snuff out the danger, defending both brilliantly and bravely during this period. HSV were clinging onto their two-goal advantage, but then came a wild end to the game. The constant pressure had its impact on the away side, as Köln, who were incessantly getting forward, found a goal to make it 2-1 via a powerful header from substitute Maina in the 78th minute. The atmosphere in the stadium then reached its crescendo as the hosts began their final offensive. However, HSV remained robust, cleared any danger and didn’t allow the home side any clear-cut chances, even during the six additional minutes at the end. Whenever HSV found themselves under some pressure from a Köln attack, Heuer Fernandes was having success when fishing the ball out from the air and parrying any shots on his goal. HSV saw out a narrow, hard-fought away victory to make an ideal, winning start to the new season.
