Match Preview vs FC St. Pauli
It returns. The Stadtderby, the bragging rights in the city of Hamburg. It all comes to blows on Friday evening in the Millerntor. HSV against FC St.Pauli.
The game where form heads out of the window and anything is possible. Friday evening will cook up as always a tasty and feisty affair, between the two sides that are only separated by 7km. Hamburg is heating up as the first meeting of the two sides will unfold for the first time in this league season. Compared to last season the sides, going by the league table, aren’t sitting as closely in the standings but what the Stadtderby could tell a completely different story.
Our Opponents:
FC St. Pauli enjoyed a relatively good season last year, sitting at the top of the tree for most of it but missed out on a promotion play off play at the expense, of yours truly, the HSV. Since then things haven’t looked at all like the team that impressed last season. With a few important outgoings like Guido Burgstaller and Daniel-Koffi Kyereh, Timo Schultz’s squad hasn’t been quite as creative and aggressive in the forward lines. Former Werder Bremen youngster, Johannes Eggestein has proven himself somewhat as the new main goalscoring threat for the Kiezkicker. The biggest thing going into Friday’s game is St. Pauli are without a win in the 2.Bundesliga since August. The 3-0 victory on Matchday 4 against newly promoted 1.FC Magdeburg was the last time our rivals picked up full points. Giving Schultz and his side the upmost lust for a derby day victory. We hope not!
HSV Round Up:
Last week’s result, no matter how it may have looked, was disappointing, but we have to look forward at the new match weekend. Tim Walter was full of hype and anticipation ahead of Friday’s clash. “We want an away win at home in Hamburg. I expect a hot, heated duel - both in the stands and on the pitch. And that's nice, because rivalry is part of sport.” Ahead of the derby our coach also announced that Leibold will join the list of the long term injuries but he should be able to count on everyone else left in the squad. HSV come into the game on complete different form to their rivals, as they have not won since August, which is also the last HSV lost a game. Robert Glatzel’s goal at the weekend puts him at the top of the scoring charts heading in the weekends fixtures. The striker grabbed his seventh goal in 11 outings so far!
Match Facts:
Positive overall balance
Of the 107 Hamburg derbies played so far, HSV has won 69. In addition, 16 draws and 22 defeats have been recorded. The last encounter on 21 January this year also went to the Rothosen, when captain Sebastian Schonlau (58th) and Bakery Jatta (70th) scored to secure a 2-1 home victory. At the Millerntor, there is also a victory in 2.Liga - on 10 March 2019, the Rothosen won furiously 4-0, before three defeats followed at the city rivals. In terms of the second division record of this duel (two wins, two draws and four defeats), there is therefore still plenty of room for improvement.
Ball magnets and passing machines
HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau is once again one of the ball magnets and passing machines of the 2.Liga this season. The centre-back recorded the second most ball actions (951) and passes (758) of all second division players. His counterpart on the opposite side, Croatian central defender Jakov Medic, dribbles similarly strongly. He has the fourth most ball contacts (922) and even has the most passes in the league (767). An interesting duel in central defence.
Differences in goal
As similar as the two strong central defenders are, the goalkeepers of both teams perform statistically differently. While HSV keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, who is available again after a stomach complaint, leads the league with a whopping 87 per cent of shots saved, FCSP keepers Nikola Vasilj (56.3 per cent) and Dennis Smarsch (50 per cent) find themselves at the bottom of the table in this category. The veteran Sascha Burchert, who was hired as the third goalkeeper, is still waiting for his chance in the box and has not been in the squad lately.
