Match Preview vs RB Leipzig
The DFB Pokal is back. HSV head to Bundesliga side and current holders RB Leipzig for the second round of the cup competition.
The Red Bull Arena will play host to our DFB Pokal second round match against cup holders RB Leipzig on Tuesday evening. The Pokal nights are special, and especially when playing against higher league opposition, not even just the holders of the competition. While HSV have had a good start to their domestic league season, Leipzig have stumbled in the Bundesliga but performed well in the Champions League. League aside, both sides enjoyed a long run in the Pokal last season, and both will be looking to go further again, starting by winning tomorrow night!
Leipzig in the Pokal:
1st Round: 0-8 FC Teutonia 05 Ottensen
The Roten Bullen were provided with their first piece of major silverware when they went all the way to Berlin last season and beat SC Freiburg in the Final. Although they had made it to the final the previous season, then manager Domenico Tedesco managed one of the clubs greatest accomplishments in May 2022.
This years tournament, HSV will be the second Hamburg based club that Leipzig will have faced. An 8-0 victory over Regionalliga Nord side FC Teutonia 05 Ottensen was the score in the first round as they flew themselves into the hat for the latter stages. A Timo Werner hat-trick, double from André Silva and goals from Emil Forsberg, Christopher Nkunku and Dani Olmo secured access to the second Round where HSV will hope prove a tougher test.
HSV in the Pokal:
1st Round : 1-3 vs SpVgg Bayreuth
Last season, Tim Walter and his side created some fantastic memories for the team and the fans as HSV made their way to the Semi-Finals of the Pokal. Despite defeat to Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, it was a rather successful pokal run for a 2.Liga side.
This season, it started rather rocky, but a win is a win. A 3-1 victory over newly promoted 3.Liga side SpVgg Bayreuth required an additional 30 minutes for the Rothosen. Ransford Yeboah Königsdörffer struck at either side of the final whistle, with Sebastian Schonlau striking between those to secure late winners in Bavaria.
