Marcell Jansen to not seek re-election as HSV president

After six years in the role, the 39-year-old explained his decision to not seek re-election: “This summer marks a new chapter of my life where I want to focus on advancing my career.”

Jansen first informed his family of the decision, before doing the same with the club’s committees and executive board. The 39-year-old will therefore not stand for re-election at the member’s meeting in June 2025, with Jansen’s six-year spell as an honorary member of the executive board set to come to an end.

However, Jansen still has plenty he hopes to accomplish before the end of his term. “The last six years as HSV president were very intense — I greatly enjoyed this time and I’m very grateful for the experience,” he said. “My time as president was a successful period for the club — especially thanks to the remarkable commitment of vice-presidents Bernd Wehmeyer and Michael Papenfuß. Now, we will focus our energy on the months leading up to June in order to continue to pursue important HSV issues, together with our members and the committees.”

Jansen’s reason for his decision are clear: “This summer marks a new chapter of my life where I want to focus on advancing my career. As such, I’ve decided to not stand for re-election and to communicate this clearly and with enough notice. I hope that HSV will select a president who will bring new ideas to the club and who — just as I have done — will be fully committed to serving the interests of the members. I will always remain closely associated with HSV and am already looking forward to hopefully making many appearances for our legends team.”
