“It wasn’t good enough today”
HSV were beaten 2-1 in Elversberg on Saturday afternoon, their first defeat of the season. Captain Schonlau and goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes gave their thoughts on the loss after the game.
Sebastian Schonlau: We didn’t start too badly and were unlucky with the two disallowed goals. However, we then conceded in disappointing fashion. We were a little sloppy today. We lost our way a bit in the second half and allowed Elversberg to create far too many chances. We wanted to build on our performances from the recent weeks, and, to be honest, we failed to do that.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: It wasn’t good enough from any of us today. The first half was okay – we controlled the game, even if our tempo wasn’t quick enough. We were in the game, but conceded that frustrating goal. We were too sloppy after the break and failed to put them under enough pressure. We cannot afford to play like this. We spoke a lot before the game and knew what to expect with the small and compact stadium here, however we weren’t good enough on the ball and have to improve on that. The atmosphere in Osnabrück next Friday will be similar to what we experienced today.
Jonas Boldt: I think we started well and were unlucky with the offside goal and then the individual error that saw them go 1-0 up. That obviously changed the game a lot. It was a scrappy affair after that, and we never really fully controlled it, or showed what we’re really capable of. Throwing the kitchen sink at them in the final 10 minutes ultimately wasn’t enough. Looking at the statistics, we possibly had enough chances before then, but we misplaced too many passes and made too many mistakes – which ultimately helps the opponents.
Tim Walter: We only have ourselves to blame for this defeat. The first goal in particular came from an individual error, one that should not be happening. Up until that point, we had shown that we wanted to win the game and also had a goal ruled out for offside. Our second disallowed goal should have stood for me. That didn’t make life any easier for us. We tried to switch things up after the break, but then Miro Muheim got injured and that didn’t help us. We gave our best in the closing stages and pulled one back, however it wasn’t enough in the end.
Horst Steffen: I’m extremely pleased with my team’s performance. We took our first chance to score, covered lots of ground and kept things tight, which helped to deny HSV. We had to sit back a bit deeper than we’d planned, however that enabled us to break more often in the second half and create more opportunities for ourselves. It wasn’t an undeserved victory when you consider all that. I don’t think we could have complained if they had equalised late on though, but I believe my team deserved the win.
