HSV suffer defeat in Düsseldorf
Friday evening was one to forget for the Rothosen, who fell to a 2-0 defeat after Heyer was shown an early red card. It was the first time in 30 games that HSV were kept goalless.
Hamburger SV suffered a 2-0 defeat away against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Friday evening in front of around 10,000 traveling fans at a sold-out Düsseldorf Arena. Goals from Klaus (11’) and Tsolis (63’) each side of half time secured the points for the home side. In each half Hamburg conceded a goal and lost a player. In the first half, Klaus’ opener was followed by an injury to Katterbach, while Moritz Heyer was shown a second yellow card shortly after the break (51’) before the home side doubled the lead. The ten men of HSV were unable to mount a comeback and as a result succumbed to a 2-0 defeat, also being kept scoreless for the first time in 30 matches.
A start to forget...
Head coach Steffen Baumgart made one change to his side, bringing the recently suspended Benes back into the starting XI in place of Königsdörffer. It was not a good start for HSV, with Fortuna opening the scoring on the counter after just 11 minutes. Klaus found the back of the net for the home side in a move that saw left-back Katterbach suffer an injury. As a result, Baumgart was forced into an early reshuffle. Despite dominating possession afterwards, the Rothosen struggled to create clear chances against a deep and well-organised Düsseldorf defence. Robert Glatzel had the most significant chance on the half-hour mark, but his effort was one of just a few chances for either side and the hosts went into the break with a one-goal lead.
... and a second double blow
The second half also began poorly from a HSV perspective. Just six minutes after the restart, Heyer was shown a second yellow card after a tackle on Klaus and HSV were reduced to ten. To add insult to injury, a second blow came in the form of a second goal for the hosts around ten minutes later when substitute Jestrzembski attacked on the counter and Tsolis doubled the lead. With HSV two goals and a player down, spaces opened up for the hosts as Baumgart’s side took more risks to get back into the game, and goalkeeper Raab was on hand on a number of occasions to prevent the defecit from being even larger. At the other end, HSV were unable to reduce the disadvantage and were made to do with a 2-0 defeat in Düsseldorf.
