HSV slump to first home defeat of the season
Despite a wonder goal from Laszlo Benes, the Rothosen lost their last home game of the calendar year 2-1 to SC Paderborn. It was also the first time that HSV have lost at the Volksparkstadion this season.
Hamburger SV’s seven-game winning streak at the Volksparkstadion came to an end on Saturday as they were defeated 2-1 by SC Paderborn. 55,244 fans watched HSV get off to a dream start, with Laszlo Benes scoring an absolute screamer to put the home side in front after 11 minutes. The Rothosen’s lead wouldn’t last long, however, with SCP equalising ten minutes later (21’). Paderborn completed the turnaround after the break thanks to a goal from Ilyas Ansah (62’). HSV refused to give up and threw everything at SC Paderborn, but it just wasn’t their day. Benes and Jatta both hit the crossbar in added time, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a first loss at home in the league this season.
Benes opens the scoring with screamer
Tim Walter made four changes to the side that started in Wednesday’s loss against Hertha BSC, with Ambrosius, Glatzel, Van der Brempt and Poreba replacing Hadzikadunic, Nemeth, Mikelbrencis and the suspended Jonas Meffert. The much-changed HSV side didn’t take long to settle, however, and had three good opportunities in the opening ten minutes through Pherai, Öztunali and Glatzel. The Rothosen finally got their reward in the 11th minute and they broke the deadlock in style. Benes controlled a high ball with his knee and volleyed it from around 25 yards out. The ball flew past Paderborn’s keeper to send the home fans wild.
Paderborn, who had started the game well, weren’t too phased by the early goal and controlled the flow of the game. After some nice link-up play from Bilbija and Muslija, the former would find himself through on goal and coolly slotted the ball past Heuer Fernandes to level things up again (21’). Both teams continued to try and play positive football, but HSV looked to be on the front foot. They almost took the lead again after half an hour, but Boevink was able to deny Jatta and Glatzel. Despite a few more chances, the teams would go into the break level-pegging.
Misfortune strikes
The visitors started to dictate the game more and more after the break. HSV’s Ambrosius coming off didn’t help matters and his replacement, Dennis Hadzikadunic, stumbled while competing against Ansah for the ball ten minutes later. SCP’s striker pounced on the error and bagged the away side’s second goal of the game in the 62nd minute.
SV managed to compose themselves after going behind in such unfortunate fashion and the Volksparkstadion came alive after Paderborn had a man sent off in the 69th minute. Unfortunately, the Rothosen squandered their advantage, with Muheim also seeing red ten minutes later. HSV threw everything they had at SCP in the closing stages and were a whisker away from tying things up, as both Benes and Jatta hit the crossbar in the dying seconds of the match. HSV’s first home loss of the season also marked the end of an incredible run of form at home, with their seven-match winning streak at the Volksparkstadion coming to a halt.
