HSV sign Mebude on loan
Scotland U21 international Adedire Mebude has joined the Rothosen on loan from Belgian top-flight side KVC Westerlo.
Hamburger SV have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of the 20-year-old right winger for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, helping compensate for the absence of Bakery Jatta following his ankle ligament injury. “Bringing in Adedire Mebude on loan gives us those same core skills for that position, while we also believe that he has great potential, said board member for sport, Stefan Kuntz. Sporting director Claus Costa added: “With his explosiveness and pace, as well as his strengths on the counter and running in behind, Adedire is a player who can help us in a number of areas and is an ideal addition to our options on the wing.”
“I want to get my teammates into the game and give the fans something to cheer”
The winger has made 19 competitive appearances for Westerlo this season (2 goals, 2 assists) and is part of the current Scotland U21 setup (13 games, 2 assists). Mebude was born in London but also has both Scottish and Nigerian citizenship. He came through the academy at Glasgow giants Rangers before moving to Manchester City at U18 level, where he scored 30 goals and provided 34 assists in 71 competitive appearances for their youth teams. He made the step up to senior football in 2023 with KVC Westerlo in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be part of HSV and to be able to call this stadium – which I can barely find the words for – my home,” said “Dire”, as he prefers people to call him. The talks with Stefan Kuntz, Claus Costa and head coach Merlin Polzin convinced him this was the right move, although Mebude said himself: “When HSV come asking, you don’t say no.” Now he’s hoping to make his debut in Sunday’s meeting with Hannover 96 in front of the home fans, who can look forward to seeing a pacy winger with an eye for goal and his fellow players: “I want to get my teammates into the game and give the fans something to cheer – that’s what it’s all about. That and helping HSV achieve their number one goal. I want to play my part and will give my absolute best.”
