HSV see off Braunschweig in 2-1 win
HSV made it seven wins from seven games at home on Friday night with a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Braunschweig. Ramos and Pherai scored in quick succession before the break, before Kaufmann scored the only goal of the second half for the visitors.
Hamburger SV defeated Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1 Friday evening (24th November). Two goals in two minutes from Ramos (25’) and Pherai (26’) gave HSV a 2-0 half-time lead. After the break, Kaufmann pulled one back in the 62nd minute and even had the ball in the back of the net for the equaliser, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Therefore, HSV were able to hold on to record three points and a seventh consecutive home league win.
Two quickfire goals to take the lead...
Tim Walter was able to call upon Ramos and Ambrosius, who each recovered in time, to form the central defensive pairing in Hamburg's back four to face Braunschweig. Meanwhile, the visitors lined up with five in defence and Walter’s side initially found it difficult to break through in the final third, being made to wait 18 minutes for their first chance of the game. However, Braunschweig goalkeeper Hoffmann was equal to Glatzel as he broke though on goal.
Hoffmann also made a good save to deny Muheim in the 24th minute, but HSV had their opener from the resulting corner. Dompe delivered the ball into the box after receiving a short pass and Ramos powered a header into the back of the net. A matter of seconds later, the lead was doubled when Pherai found the bottom corner from the edge of the area. HSV almost had another chance to increase their lead further when Jatta was brought down in the area, but a decision did not need to be made as the offside flag was raised. A VAR check confirmed that the winger was in an offside position. Shortly after, the stadium fell silent after a nasty collision between Hoffmann and Braunschweig defender Decarli as the pair looked to deal with a Dompe cross. Both medical teams assisted the defender, who was thankfully able to walk off the pitch after a few minutes of treatment. Play restarted and HSV saw out the half with their two-goal lead intact.
... and secure a hard-fought victory
HSV looked for more of the same after the break but lost their two-goal cushion just after the hour mark when Braunschweig pulled a goal back through their striker Kaufmann. Finding himself in space on the edge of the area, the 31-year-old powered a drive into the back of the net in the 62nd minute, bringing the visitors back into the fight.
With the goal behind them, Braunschweig pushed forward and initially found it hard to get through the HSV defence. That changed in the 74th minute however, when Kaufmann headed in from close range for his second of the night to tie the game. Luckily for HSV, the goal was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check. Once again, the medical teams were called into action after a clash of heads between Ramos and Gomez. Eintracht had a couple more chances of their own, but HSV despite missing a big chance to make it 3-1 in added time, were able to hold on and make sure a hard-earned three points stayed in Hamburg, maintaining their perfect home record and making it seven wins from seven home games.
