HSV secure services of Louis Schaub on loan

Hamburger SV have been able to bolster its squad before the start of the club’s winter training camp in Portugal, recruiting the Austrian Louis Schaub for the rest of the season. The 25-year-old midfielder, who is under contract in Cologne until the summer of 2022, signs on loan, strengthening manager Dieter Hecking’s options in midfield, with the Austrian comfortable in both central and wide areas. HSV Head of Sport Jonas Boldt was thrilled to recruit the services of such a talented player: “Louis Schaub is a player who brings a lot of quality going forward. We couldn’t believe at first that a player of his calibre would be available on the market.” The 25-year-old’s experience was another factor in his acquisition by the Rothosen, according to Boldt: “Despite only being 25, he is a very experienced player and helped to push 1. FC Köln into the Bundesliga last season. He is very adaptable in attack and means we have another quality asset at our disposal.” Schaub himself is chomping at the bit to get going: “I’m very happy that the transfer came off in the end. When the offer came in from HSV, I didn’t have to think about it that long. HSV is a big club in Germany and I am convinced that we can be successful in the second half of the season. I want to integrate myself quickly within the squad and help the club to attain its goal for the season.”

After eleven years at 32-time Austrian champions SK Rapid Wien, with 45 goals and 30 assists in 204 appearances for his boyhood club, Schaub moved across the Alps and into Germany for the first time, signing for 1. FC Köln in summer 2018. Three goals and thirteen assists prove that the versatile midfielder certainly played his part in the Billy goats’ promotion season last time out, playing on the wing as well as just behind the striker. The Austrian found game time limited in the top tier, only making nine appearances, scoring a goal and providing one for a teammate. Schaub, the son of late ex-Bundesliga pro Fred Schaub, has represented his country on 14 occasions, scoring five times.
