HSV relieve Steffen Baumgart of his duties
The dismissal of the head coach follows a period of poor performances and results. McKenna and Wagner also depart from the coaching staff. Assistant coach Polzin takes over as head coach on an interim basis.
Following the disappointing 2-2 draw against Schalke 04 and an in-depth analysis of the situation, on Sunday morning (24/11), board member for sport Stefan Kuntz informed head coach Steffen Baumgart that he will be relieved of his duties with immediate effect. “Steffen gave everything for HSV, always acting with great passion, energy and commitment right until the end of his tenure. However, yesterday’s match only compounded our analysis of the current situation, once again making it clear that a new impetus is necessary in order to overcome this recent period of poor performances and results,’ Kuntz explained, regarding the decision.
Baumgart, who took over HSV on 20th February 2024, coached the team for a total of 27 matches (25 in Bundesliga 2, twice DFB-Pokal), achieving a points average of 1.59 (W12, D7, L8). The 52-year-old accepted the decision. “I would like to thank Stefan Kuntz and Jonas Boldt for giving me the opportunity to work at my childhood club,” he said, adding, “It was both an exciting and intense period. I will always be connected to this club and hope that HSV can achieve their goals.
Thank you also to all the staff and club employees.”
In addition to the head coach, his assistants Rene Wagner and Kevin McKenna have also been released. The team, which had recently gone five consecutive competitive matches without a win, was informed of the decisions on Sunday morning. Their preparation ahead of the upcoming match away to Karlsruher SC (Sunday 01/12, kick-off 13:30 CET) will take place under the guidance of assistant coach Merlin Polzin.
