“I told the referee: Please don’t take that goal away from me!”
All of HSV’s attackers were involved in a goal in the 5-0 home win over SSV Jahn Regensburg on Sunday. The squad depth proved a big advantage for Steffen Baumgart, as the players discussed after the game.
Sebastian Schonlau: We put together some good attacking moves and scored plenty of goals. It was nice to see the lads who came off the bench get goals too. The depth we have our in squad allows us to bring quality off the bench. We have struggled at times in games like this one in recent years. We’ve now beaten Münster 4-1 and Regensburg 5-0, putting in two dominant displays. A trip to the Betzenberg to play Kaiserslautern is a different kettle of fish, but we’ll be looking for a third straight victory.
Davie Selke: It’s a good thing for us – you need a strong squad if you want to get promoted. Everybody wants to play and everyone scored, hopefully it’ll carry on in this way. If every striker scores in every game, we’ll end the season with a lot of goals. I told the referee: Please don’t take that goal away from me! We were both pulling each other’s shirts and I think it was the right decision to not blow for a foul.
Marco Richter: We put in a really good performance, you don’t win 5-0 all that often. It was a perfect day. We’re pleased to have won another game at home. We wanted to get back out there after the international break, and played well at both ends of the pitch. We’ve got a really good squad and want to show that every weekend.
Fabio Balde: Fabio Balde: It’s been a great week for me, I’m living my dream. It’s hard to put it all into words really. The coach gives me confidence and that helps me out on the pitch. Every footballer will tell you that you play better with confidence. I want to pay him back as much as I can. I now need to keep on working hard in training every week to earn my place in the team in the coming games.
Steffen Baumgart: We played really well, were clinical from the first whistle to quickly go ahead and were really solid after that. We managed to score a few more goals at the death thanks to all the players giving their all until the final whistle, so I’ve not got a lot to complain about today. The thing that I really liked was the body language of the players. If we lost a challenge, we’d win the next one. If we missed a chance, we immediately looked to create another one and take it. The lads kept at it and I’m really happy with that. Nine goals in our last two games isn’t too bad either. I think we’re developing nicely and we want to continue doing so.
