HSV advanced to the next round of the DFB-Pokal after a penatly shoot-out win over Arminia Bielefeld after a 1-1 draw in regular time thanks to goals from Bielefeld's Schipnoski (11') and HSV's Jatta (77'). Goalkeeper Matheo Raab was the hero after saving the decisive penalty.
HSV are through to the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal after a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Arminia Bielefeld on Tuesday evening (31st October). The two sides were unable to be separated in regular time, after Nicklas Schipnoski's 11th-minute opener was cancelled out by substitute Bakery Jatta (77'). With no more goals in extra time, penalties were required and goalkeeper Matheo Raab saved Marius Wörl's effort to become the hero of the night.
Tim Walter made six changes to the side that faced Kaiserslautern last time out. Ramos, Heyer, Jatta, Glatzel and Meffert all moved out of the starting XI, with Ambrosius, Mickelbrencis, Öztunali, Nemeth and debutant Poreba coming in. The head coach also changed goalkeepers as Matheo Raab replaced Daniel Heuer Fernandes, as he did in the first round. Bielefeld coach Kniat also made four changes, with Özkan, Boujellab, Shipnoski and the former-HSV man Wintzheimer replacing Wörl, Biankadi, Putaro and Klos.
Schipnoski gives a Halloween fright
HSV were looking to avoid a Halloween scare against third-division opponents Arminia Bielefeld and started the game well, with Öztunali forcing goalkeeper Kersken into a good save before Königsdörffer headed the rebound over the bar (6’). At the other end, the hosts took the lead with a rebound of their own. Boujellab's shot from the edge of the area was pushed onto the post by Raab, but bounced back into the danger zone and Schipnoski found the back of the net with the goal at his mercy (11’).
Bielefeld sat back after taking the lead and HSV dominated possession without managing to create any real goalscoring chances. On the half-hour mark, Königsdörffer’s shot was blocked (31’) before Pherai was denied by a fantastic save from Kerksen. He headed an Ambrosius cross goalwards, only for the goalkeeper to get down to his left and turn around the post (38’). The resulting corner came to nothing and the two sides went into the break with the home team 1-0 ahead.
Jatta makes impact off the bench
Tim Walter made no changes at the break. The second half showed signs of promise, with HSV pressing their opponents high but were either too sloppy in the final third or could not find a way past Kerken. The head coach made his first changes just after the hour mark, with Glatzel replacing Nemeth (62’) before Öztunali made way for Jatta shortly after. It was the latter who had the biggest and almost instant impact, levelling the scores with a head in the 77th minute. HSV continued to pepper the Bielefeld goal after equalising, but attempts from Benes with two attempts (80’, 81’), Königsdörffer (82’) and Glatzel (84’), came to nothing. At the other end, Raab was on hand to save HSV and ensure the scores remained level at the end of regular time, savings efforts from Klos and Mizuta.
Extra time was delayed after a medical emergency in the stadium, with HSV medical team assisting as football took a back seat for the time being. After a short break, the football continued and HSV enjoyed the better of the chances, but Königsdörffer (92’) and Glatzel (93’) couldn’t find the back of the net with their efforts. Bielefeld seemed to focus on defending their goal more than attacking the other end. Mickbrencis tested Kersken once more with a long-range shot (104’) just before the end of the first 15 minutes of extra time.
The second half of extra time was a similar picture, with HSV having the opportunities but unable to find the breakthrough. Heyer’s header was cleared off the line in the most notable chance, while Boujellab had Bielefeld’s best effort at the other end (117’). After two hours of football, the tie would be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
In the shoot-out, Benes, Glatzel and Muheim held their nerve for HSV, while 20-year-old Elija Krahn saw his effort saved by Kersken. For the opposition veteran Klos stepped up first and put his shot over the bar, but Gohlke, Mizuta and Großer scored their spot kicks. With the final kick, Bielefeld’s Wörl was denied by the strong hands of cup hero Matheo Raab and HSV advanced to the next round after a 4-3 shoot-out win.
