HSV lose crazy game 4-3 against Hannover 96
In an action-packed game, HSV twice came back from 2-0 and 3-1 behind, but were denied a draw by the guests, who scored in stoppage time to claim a late win against 10 men.
Hamburger SV lost 4-3 in their home game against Hannover 96 on Friday evening (9th February). The guests took an early 2-0 lead at a sold-out Volksparkstadion through Tresoldi and Ernst, before HSV got straight back in the game with a goal from Benes. However, the guests then claimed the upper hand again, with a goal from Schaub before half time. HSV piled on the pressure after half time and pulled the scoreline back to 3-3 with goals from Hadzikadunic and Glatzel, but Ernst scored a decisive late winner in injury time, meaning that HSV lost a crazy all north German clash 4-3.
An unfortunate start…
HSV head coach Tim Walter made two changes to his starting eleven from the side who won 2-1 in Berlin. A fit-again Glatzel came into the side for Nemeth upfront, while Raab was preferred in goal ahead of Heuer Fernandes. But before Raab was able to make a positive impression, he had already conceded, with Hannover storming out the gates and having a series of corners in the first ten minutes. Tresoldi powerfully headed the fourth of these home, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead (11’).
HSV worked to try and find an immediate answer and put pressure on the Hannover goal, but instead it was the visitors who scored once again. Schaub set Ernst through in the Hamburg box and his pullback was unluckily deflected into his own goal by Ramos (21’). The Rothosen weren’t shocked by this and continued to push forward, hitting back immediately. Benes remained ice-cold in front of goal only three minutes after this second setback, controlling a clipped ball into the box and finishing past Zieler to make it 2-1. Finally, the atmosphere picked up and HSV went on the hunt for an equaliser. Glatzel and Jatta came close, but it was Hannover who struck once again. Dehm clipped the ball through Tresoldi, whose shot was well-saved by Raab, but he could do nothing about the rebound, which was rolled home by Schaub. This meant the guests led 3-1 just after the half-an-hour mark and this goal had a more visible effect on the Rothosen than the first two goals. In the last fifteen minutes before half time, HSV tried fight back against this deficit, but they failed to get back into a rhythm, meaning that they went back into the dressing rooms trailing disappointingly at half time.
… and a crazy finish
Tim Walter made a change at half time, with Hadzikadunic coming on for Ambrosius. The centre-back crept forward for a corner at the beginning of the second half and was involved immediately, heading home a Muheim cross from a short corner to make it 3-2. What a start to the second half, which was then delayed initially for a short period of time, and then for around half-an-hour, due to a fan protest. Still, once the game got underway again, HSV got straight back into their groove.
Dompe fired just wide after a brilliant dribble, while at the other end, Schaub slammed a shot over from close range after a quick counterattack. A crazy finish was in store once again at the Volkspark with half-an-hour left to play. HSV wanted to make the most of this period, attacked aggressively and won the ball well – and chances followed. Glatzel, Muheim and Dompe all went close between the 70th and 80th minutes, but fired narrowly over or wide. This meant a slender lead for Hannover going into a competitive, end-to-end final period, where neither team gave each other an inch, competing for every ball, in every tackle and for every metre. In the final moments, the game livened up once again, with Dompe and Benes attacking rapidly in the 86th minute and taking a corner so quickly that it took the whole Hannover defence by surprised so that Glatzel, who was wide awake to the opportunity, was free in the middle to head home and make it 3-3. The Volkspark erupted and emotions were running high. On the pitch, this ran over, with Benes making a strong tackle on Leopold and seeing red after a VAR review. This meant HSV would have to play the whole 16 minutes of additional time a man down, but still went for the win and were clinically punished for it. In the eighth minute of additional time, Hannover played a combination through the HSV defence and Ernst scored to make it 4-3, putting the finishing touches on an emotional, fast-paced and crazy match.
