HSV lose 2-1 in dress rehearsal against Rangers
The ‘Rothosen’ lose final their final friendly of pre-season against Rangers at Ibrox. Jean-Luc Dompe pulls a goal back shortly before full time (90+1’).
The fact that this meeting between the 55-time Scottish champions and Hamburger SV, both clubs steeped in tradition and closely connected by a fan friendship, was no ordinary friendly was already clear to see before the game had got underway. Following a fan event last night, there was plenty going on at Ibrox before kick-off. The roughly 600 Hamburg fans at the ground were joined by a delegation featuring board members Jonas Boldt and Dr. Eric Huwer, as well as mascot Dino Hermann, in watching the action live.
On the pitch, HSV warmed up in special shirts reading “Uns Uwe”, a year and a day since Uwe Seeler passed away, before changing into their brand new third kit. The ‘Rothosen’ were under immediate pressure from their hosts, and in opening stages shaped by a high tempo, it was the hosts who had the first shot on target, but this was confidently saved by goalkeeper Daniel Heuer at the near post (4’). Moments later, Rangers countered down the left and crossed the ball to the back post, but Ianis Hagi could only find the side netting (8’). At the other end, Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer could also only hit the side netting from a tight angle (13’). In the following period, both teams cancelled each other out, and the game was mainly confined to the space between the penalty areas. In the middle of the first half, the hosts created another good goalscoring opportunity, with Kieran Dowell finding himself free in the middle, but his effort was well-saved by Heuer Fernandes who reacted quickly. Hagi then fired the rebound over the crossbar (21’). There was an almost identical situation ten minutes later, as Fashion Sakala drove into the middle from the left and got a shot off, but once again Heuer Fernandes was equal to it and this time it was Abdallah Sima who missed the follow up (31’). Shortly afterwards, Immanuel Pherai had two presentable opportunities from set-pieces, but he missed wide of the right-hand post and then curled an effort onto the roof of the net (34’, 35’). At the other end, the hosts finally made the breakthrough through Sakala, who tucked the ball past Heuer Fernandes from close range (38’). The Scottish side doubled their lead from the penalty spot shortly before half time (45+1’). Guilherme Ramos brought down a Rangers player in the box and captain James Tavernier stepped up to convert the resulting spot kick. This meant the hosts took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room for half time.
Tim Walter brought on Matheo Raab, Stephan Ambrosius, Laszlo Benes, Jean-Luc Dompe and Bakery Jatta at half time, and his side started the half with much more possession, but couldn’t find a way through a compact Rangers defence. All in all, the tempo of the game was slightly reduced in comparison to the first half, with a number of substitutions for both sides. It took until the middle of the second half for 46,542 fans inside Ibrox to witness another chance of note. First, a Rangers attacker missed a lob (59’) , before Benes forced Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland into a save at the other end after nice interplay between Dompe and Jatta (63’). 10 minutes later, Raab showed quick reflexes to parry away a header from close range (73’). Andras Nemeth also entered the fray at this point, making his comeback following an ankle fracture and playing for the first time since April. There was more good news from a sporting side moments before full time, with Jean-Luc Dompe curling a brilliant freekick over the wall and into the top corner to pull one back for HSV (90+1’). The final whistle sounded moments later handing HSV a 2-1 friendly defeat, but one that also came with lots of positive lessons to be learned.
