HSV fight their way to deserved 1-0 home win in Baumgart’s first game in charge
The Rothosen won their home game against SV Elversberg 1-0 in the first game since Steffen Baumgart was appointed head coach. Ransford Königsdörffer scored the only goal of the game.
Hamburger SV beat SV Elversberg 1-0 in their home game on Sunday (25th February). Königsdörffer scored the first goal (53’) of the Steffen Baumgart era in front of 54,190 supporters at a full Volksparkstadion, giving the Rothosen a 1-0 win and securing a first home win of 2024 after three recent home defeats in a row. All in all, it was a fully deserved three points against the impressive newly-promoted club from the Saarland, with the Rothosen having more possession, winning more tackles and crucially creating more clear-cut chances than their opponents.
Königsdörffer has big chance…
Steffen Baumgart was missing Benes, who was suspended for a second consecutive matchday, as well as Ramos (suspension) and the injured Ambrosius and Dompe for his first game as HSV head coach. Fit-again captain Schonlau and Hadzikadunic formed a new-look centre-back partnership, while Königsdörffer came in upfront. It was HSV’s number 11 who had the first shot on target of the Baumgart era, but having been played through by Glatzel his shot was saved by the outstretched boot of SVE goalkeeper Kristof. This was the stand-out chance generated by an early period of high gegenpressing from the Rothosen, something which Baumgart encouraged in the early stages and led to his side winning the ball back on a number of occasions. The second and third best chances for Hamburg in the first half also fell Königsdörffer’s way, who was played through in both the 34th and 44th minutes, but he couldn’t find the back of the net either time. The visitors grew into the game following a quiet opening period and even had a couple of dangerous openings either side of these two Königsdörffer efforts. Wanner narrowly missed the top right-hand corner with a shot from inside the box in the 41st minute, while HSV ‘keeper Raab had to be at full stretch to turn an effort from Sahin around the corner in the 45th minute. This meant that the game went into half time deservedly goalless.
… and Königsdörffer finds the back of the net in the second half
The Rothosen took control of the game once again after half time, and were more effective out of possession whilst also looking to drive forward with more speed and purpose with the ball. This adjustment was rewarded immediately, with the Glatzel-Königsdörffer combination which had looked so dangerous at the beginning of the first half proving a threat once again in the 53rd minute, and this time leading to the opening goal. Having been played in by Glatzel once again, Königsdörffer this time decided to shoot at the near post instead of going across the ‘keeper, and he hammered a shot high into the roof of the net to give Hamburg the lead. It was a deserved lead after HSV’s strong start to the second half, but Elversberg refused to give up at the Volkspark. This meant it remained a tight and exciting game head into the final stages, especially as the game once again came alive in the closing moments. Elversberg piled on the pressure in attack, which gave HSV space to counter and led to some promising attacks. At the other end, the visitors also created one final clear-cut chance, which could have changed the course of the game in its final moments, but Raab made a brilliant reflex save to deny Vandermersch’s header and preserve the lead to give HSV a home win.
