HSV extends contract with Josha Vagnoman until 2024
The 19-year-old academy graduate, who has been at the club since 2010, has extended his contract that initially ran until June 2021, by three years.
Hamburger SV have reached an agreement with full-back Josha Vagnoman to extend his contract by three years, with his original contract set to run out on the 30th June 2021. The negotiations with the native Hamburg man had begun before the difficulties presented by the coronavirus pandemic, and were drawn to a close on Friday (17th April) as the 19-year-old put pen to paper at the Volksparkstadion. The deal keeps the youngster at the Rothosen, a team he joined in 2010 and for whom he became the youngest player in the club’s Bundesliga history in March 2018.
“Real identification with HSV and Hamburg”
“We are proud to be able to convince Josha, a very talented academy graduate, that we are on the right path and to be able to tie him to the club long-term. Josha really identifies with the club and the city of his birth, and has made the first successful steps in professional football over the past few years with us. We want to continue to support him as he develops on and off the pitch and overcome the sporting challenges that we will face together,” HSV sporting director Michael Mutzel explained. Vagnoman, who represents Germany at international level with the under-21s and was able to make six starting appearances in the 2. Bundesliga this season before breaking his tarsal bone, was also thrilled to extend his contract: “As a kid I dreamed of playing for HSV at some point as a professional. This season I fulfilled another dream of mine with my first professional goal. I want to continue the path that I am on with HSV and therefore am even more thrilled about the faith entrusted in me by the club.”
“I’m looking forward to the next few years!”
Josha Mamadou Karaboune Vagnoman was born on the 11th December 2000 as the son of an Ivorian father and German mother in Hamburg and played for SC Poppenbüttel as a child. Vagnoman was spotted as part of a HSV scouting initiative and moved to the club’s academy in 2010. The talented youngster moved through all of the Rothosen’s youth sides, before making his debut away at Bayern Munich on the 10th March 2018, becoming the club’s youngest-ever Bundesliga player at the tender age of 17 years, two months and 27 days. Since then, Vagnoman has been able to establish himself in the first team, playing a further 21 competitive fixtures. The 2019/20 season presented an opportunity, when first-choice right-back Jan Gyamerah was injured in September, giving the 1.87m Vagnoman the chance to fill in for his more senior colleague. As well as making his debut for the German under-21 side, Vagnoman scored his first professional goal against Aue during Matchday 7 and impressed at right-back in six performances in the starting line-up in a row in Gyamerah’s absence. However, Vagnoman broke the tarsal bone in his right foot during the DFB Pokal game against VfB Stuttgart at the end of October, an injury he has just recovered from, taking part in full training with the first team for the first time again last week. “In the past weeks and months I’ve been supported excellently by the doctors, physiotherapists and coaches, and I’m thankful to all involved for helping me to recover from this injury. I’m looking forward to the next few years and look to pay back the trust given to me by the club.”
