HSV draw at home to Karlsruhe
The Rothosen were only able to pick up a point from Matchday 30’s rescheduled game against Karlsruher SC at the Volksparkstadion. Terodde’s goal was cancelled out quickly by the visitors and the game ended 1-1.
HSV shared the points with KSC on Thursday evening (29 April) in the teams’ rescheduled Matchday 30 encounter. After a dominant first-half display, the Rothosen took the lead in the 56th minute through Terodde, who latched onto the rebound from his own saved penalty. Terodde and Co. did not lead for long, however, as Gordon’s header from a corner just 90 seconds later beat Ulreich to level the scores.
Hard-fought contest…
HSV head coach Daniel Thioune sent his team out in a 4-3-3 formation with three changes to the starting XI from Sunday. Gjasula and Narey were given the nod after impressing as substitutes against Regensburg. Van Drongelen also came into the starting line-up in place of the injured Ambrosius at centre-back. He and his defensive colleagues weren’t overly busy in the opening stages, as HSV dictated proceedings, kept the opposition away from goal and started to get some shots at goal away.
After half an hour, the shots on goal count stood at 7-0 to HSV, but only Wintzheimer’s effort from the edge of the box in the 20th minute was really dangerous. In the final 15 minutes of the half, the visitors were able to find their way back into the game, thanks to an alternating pressing tactic, and began to give HSV some scares at the other end. The first half was by and large a midfield battle with hard tackles from both teams, resulting in very few clear chances at either end.
1-1 a fair result…
Thioune’s men continued with the same fighting spirit in the second half, took control of the game and pushed for the opener. Patience was the name of the game here, as a compact opponent gave the Hamburg boys very little room to attack. As is typical for such scenarios, it was a set-piece that made the difference. Hunt’s shot from a corner was blocked deliberately by the hand of Gueye, leaving the referee no other option than to point to the spot. Terodde’s penalty was saved, but the ball bounced back out kindly for the goalscorer, and he quickly redeemed himself with the finish (56’).
Celebrations did not last long at all for the Rothosen. Just one minute and one corner later, Gjasula slipped which allowed Gordon to nod in the equaliser. HSV’s deserved breakthrough undone in less than two minutes, which took its toll on the players. Despite being the more dominant team on the whole, HSV struggled to create a sustained threat going forward, and the remaining half hour panned out without any real talking points.
