HSV draw 2-2 with Darmstadt 98
Königsdörffer and Karabec both put the Rothosen ahead in an entertaining encounter, but the Lilies twice hit back through Vukotic and Corredor.
On Sunday, 8th December, Hamburger SV drew 2-2 with Darmstadt 98 on Matchday 15 of the 2. Bundesliga. In front of 51,616 spectators at the Volksparkstadion, the Rothosen took an early lead through Königsdörffer (10’), before Vukotic levelled for the visitors (33’). Hamburg however responded again before half time when Karabec curled the ball into the corner (45’). In the second period, Darmstadt equalised once more through Corredor (63’), before both teams had big chances to win the match in an enthralling last 30 minutes. They both eventually had to settle for a point.
An early goal …
“Never change a winning team” appears to have been HSV coach Polzin’s mantra, as he named the same starting eleven from the 3-1 away win over KSC last time out. The team once again looked to keep possession and control the game, but they were up against an in-form Darmstadt side who came to the Volkspark with a lot of confidence and had the first good attacks of the game. Hornby (2’ and 6’) had the first two opportunities, before top scorer Lidberg struck the HSV post (8’). Right in the middle of this phase of SVD dominance though, the Rothosen showed how clinical they are on the counterattack. In the 10th minute, after a precise through ball from Dompe, Königsdörffer fired a low shot into the bottom left corner to give his side the lead.
After the opening goal, the two teams started to cancel each other out in midfield, though the Rothosen still edged it. Muheim (21’) and Mikelbrencis (22’) both had efforts that went wide. This time however, it was the Lilies’ turn to be the more clinical. Centre-back Vukotic advanced into the box to head Corredor’s deep cross into the far corner to make it 1-1 (33’). After the equaliser, Hamburg started to lack a bit of composure in their attacking play, but still managed to hit back again from a free kick on the right. Elfadli played it quickly to Karabec, who curled a sensational strike into the net for his first goal in HSV colours (42’). This second goal was a bolt out of the blue. Equally surprising was the huge chance for Darmstadt just before half time, when Corredor fired over the bar when free in the box.
… and a thrilling end to the game
Neither team made any changes at the break. HSV made the stronger start to the second period, and Muheim (48’), Dompe (51’) and Mikelbrencis (54’) all tried their luck from promising positions on the edge of the penalty area. Goalkeeper Schuhen was most stretched by the right-back’s shot, which he turned wide of the bottom corner. The Rothosen remained on top, and Richter’s shot on the turn (60’) deserved to be the third goal. The Lilies however found another equaliser out of nothing. Corredor took advantage of a positioning error in the HSV defence to control Lopez’s cross and slot into the far corner (63’).
HSV coach Polzin made a double change following this goal, as Balde and Selke came on to offer fresh legs. Balde created the Rothosen’s next notable opportunity when he went on an excellent solo run from deep and found Selke, who volleyed towards goal, but it went wide (74’). Less than a minute later, Elfadli powerfully headed a Muheim cross off the bar (75’). These two efforts spurred HSV on for the final 15 minutes, and got the more than 50,000-strong crowd behind them. Roared on by the fans, the Rothosen threw everything at it in search of a winner. This almost came in the 86th minute. Dompe curled the ball into the penalty area, and Selke headed towards the bottom corner. Schuhen was equal to it though, and made a sensational save to turn the ball away (86’). At the other end, the Lilies had a chance to land the killer blow, but they were themselves denied by two wonderful stops from Heuer Fernandes, who kept out both Nürnberger’s free kick and Wilhelmsson’s follow-up (89’). There were still two final chances for the hosts, but both Selke (90+1’) from close range and Muheim from distance (90+4’) missed out on netting a third HSV goal. A thrilling encounter eventually ended 2-2, which was a fair result that reflected the performances of both teams.
