HSV defeat Schalke 2-0 on league return
Hamburger SV secured a 2-0 away win against Schalke 04 thanks to first-half goals from Immanuel Pherai and Laszlo Benes.
Hamburger SV enjoyed a successful start to the second half of their league campaign with a 2-0 victory over FC Schalke 04 in front of a sell-out 61,992 crowd at the Veltins-Arena. Immanuel Pherai opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Laszlo Benes doubled the lead (35'). Early on in the second half, Benes came close to putting the game beyond doubt and increasing the lead to three, but the home side were able to clear off the line and keep themselves in the fight. However, HSV, helped out twice by the woodwork, were able to hold on to take all three points back to Hamburg.
Clinical in front of goal before the break...
With eight goals in the reverse fixture, fans could be excited going into Saturday night’s game as HSV looked for a similar outcome to their 5-3 win back in July. Long-range efforts from Laszlo Benes and Tobias Mohr ensured both goalkeepers were on their toes early on, but much of the play took place in midfield after the lively start. On 22 minutes, Immanuel Pherai broke the deadlock, heading in a ball from Ignace Van der Brempt who had returned to the starting XI.
After taking the lead, the Rothosen secured control of possession and the game, with the home side only able to threaten from a Thomas Ouwejan free-kick which struck the crossbar from some way out. However, the ball was in the back of the Schalke net once again shortly after, Laszlo Benes finishing off a fine combination involving Jean-Luc Dompe to give over 6,000 traveling HSV fans more reason to celebrate in the 35th minute. HSV took their deserved two-goal lead into the break.
... and solid at the back in the second half
The hosts responded with a half-time change, as Ron Schallenberg replaced Blendi Idrizi at the break. However, the unchanged HSV were equal to whatever came their way in defence and came close to increasing the lead at the other end. Goalscorer Benes almost had a second but saw his effort headed off the line by Tobias Mohr (54’).
Schalke made a double substitution as they looked to break down the Rothosen, while HSV head coach Tim Walter made his first change in the 72nd minute, introducing vice-captain Ludovit Reis for his return from injury to replace Pherai. For the second time in the game, Ouwejan rattled the woodwork, this time hitting the right post (74’). With luck on their side as well as a good stop from Heuer Fernandes to deny Lasme late on, HSV were able to claim three more points and take their season tally to 34, also giving Tim Walter the fitting gift on his 100th competitive game in charge – a perfect start to the second half of the season.
