HSV captain Schonlau is staying on board until 2026
The centre-back has extended his contract with the Rothosen for two extra years. HSV’s board member for sport Jonas Boldt described him as “a true professional who is eager to improve every day”.
There was good news from the Volksparkstadion on Tuesday morning, as HSV announced that club captain Sebastian Schonlau has extended his contract by a further two years. His original deal was due to expire at the end of this season, but the defender will now remain with the Rothosen until the summer of 2026.
“We’re thrilled that 'Bascho' will remain with us, particularly due to both his footballing quality and strong personality. He has dedicated himself to our ambitions, values and goals from day one and personifies them in his role as captain. He is a true professional who is eager to improve every day, both as an individual and with the team as a whole, and thus plays a significant role in the club,” explained board member for sport, Jonas Boldt.
Claus Costa, director of first-team football at HSV, shared: “We’re so happy that ‘Bascho’ is staying with us. He has proven his importance to the club to everyone over the past two years – Sebastian fully deserves to be captain, and is a role model both on and off the pitch. It's a great sign that he's committed to our club and its philosophy."
Commitment, reliability, sense of community
The 29-year-old defender is also looking forward to continuing his commitment to HSV: “I feel extremely happy here. The club and the fans are simply amazing, and they have not only fulfilled my expectations from when I started here, but completely exceeded them. I enjoy every day that I spend at the Volksparkstadion. HSV is so much more to me than just a chapter in my career, and I am determined to work alongside the boys to ultimately leave my mark on the club.”
Sebastian Schonlau transferred to HSV from SC Paderborn 07 in the summer of 2021 and was immediately appointed captain by coach Tim Walter. Since then, the defender has exercised commitment, reliability and a sense of community through his role as the skipper. To date, the talented central defender has led the Rothosen in 73 competitive fixtures (5 goals, 2 assists), not only delivering on the pitch, but also acting as a leading representative for the club and its values off it. “Although we haven't achieved our overall target yet, I'm having a great time here. We’re not giving up on our goal”, ‘Bascho’ urged. Full speed ahead, Captain!
