HSV beat Fortuna 3-0 thanks to Dompe goal and Glatzel brace
The Rothosen comfortably beat the league leaders thanks to a screamer from Jean-Luc Dompe (9’) and two goals from Robert Glatzel (83’, 90’). Matheo Raab kept a clean sheet.
HSV secured a dominant win away at league leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf on matchday 8, recording a 3-0 victory on Sunday (6th October). Jean-Luc Dompe scored a screamer in front of a sell-out crowd of 54,200 at the Merkur Spiel-Arena to put HSV into an early lead in an even first half (9’). In the second half, Matheo Raab was first called into action to maintain his clean sheet with a series of strong saves, before Giovanni Haag prevented a certain Robert Glatzel goal on the counter and was sent off (91’). The HSV striker converted the resulting penalty (83’), before scoring his second of the game in the 90th minute to put the game beyond any doubt. This result meant HSV climb into fifth place and are now only two points behind the league leaders.
Dompe screamer ...
Head coach Steffen Baumgart decided on a change in formation for the game against the league leaders, and made three changes from the side that started the home game against SC Paderborn. Ludovit Reis started in place of Dennis Hadzikadunic and replaced Daniel Elfadli in defensive midfield, with the Libya international slotting into the back-three. Out wide, Jean-Luc Dompe was preferred to Emir Sahiti and started on his preferred left-hand side, with Noah Katterbach playing off the right. Behind the striker, Marco Richter came in for Adam Karabec. There was no change in goal, with Daniel Heuer Fernandes missing out through illness meaning that Matheo Raab was between the posts as he has been in the last few weeks.
Düsseldorf looked to be compact and move the ball quickly in transition right from kick off. The first chance went the way of Giovanni Haag following a quicker counter (3’). HSV showed great composure in attack throughout the game and captialised on a counter of their own after just nine minutes. Dompe sprinted with the ball from within his own half, wasn’t closed down on the edge of the box and hammered the ball home from the edge of the box to make it 1-0. This initially took the wind out of Düsseldorf’s sails, but as the first half came to a close the game was in the balance with chances on both sides. The biggest chance to equalise was saved brilliantly by Raab in the 39th minute, as he clawed a header from Hoffmann off the line.
... and Glatzel brace
HSV’s goalkeeper was involved in proceedings more and more in the second half. Düsseldorf increased the pressure and at times restricted the Rothosen to deep inside their own half. During this period, though, there were always sparks of attacking play from HSV. The first opportunity fell to Glatzel in the 56th minute, but his shot only managed to find the post. HSV had to weather the storm at times, and managed to survive a period of real pressure from the league leaders after this, with Raab and his defence surviving shots at goal from Klaus (57’, 60’), Johannesson (57’, 71’), Iyoha (65’) and Kownacki (70’).
At the other end, HSV once again showed a clinical streak. Having been played through by substitute Königsdörffer, Glatzel had the chance to make it 2-0 but his shot was blocked by Haag’s hand as he lay on the floor, giving referee Martin Petersen no choice but to award a penalty and send the Düsseldorf man off (81’). Glatzel slotted home the resulting penalty to make it 2-0 (83’). Only minutes later, Raab was once again called into action to save from Iyoha (84’) and prevent an immediate response from Fortuna. HSV then also had the final word, with Glatzel tapping home after good work from substitute Karabec to secure his second of the day and make it 3-0 (90’). Düsseldorf then hit the post through van Brederode, and it seemed like one of those days for the home side where nothing would go in for them. In the end, it was a dominant win for HSV.
