Gideon Jung leaves HSV
The 26-year-old defender’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent. Jung is one of the longest-serving HSV players currently at the club.
HSV and Gideon Jung are to part ways ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. Both sides came to the agreement ahead of the beginning of pre-season training. The centre-back’s contract, which originally ran until 30th June 2022, has been terminated by mutual consent meaning that one of the longest-serving players at HSV will leave the club.
“Gideon is a player who has not always experienced the easiest of circumstances during his time at HSV. Nevertheless, he has always behaved as a model pro and has served the team well even in difficult times. After analysis conducted together with Gideon, we have reached the decision that a change is what is best for his future career. We would like to wish him all the best for his future and thank him for his many years of service to HSV,” said sporting director Michael Mutzel.
“I would like to thank HSV and all of the staff here for the time we have spent together and for the support they have given me over the past seven years. HSV was the club at which I made my Bundesliga debut and I will always be very proud of that. I wish the club all the best for the future and hope that next season brings promotion,” said Gideon Jung as he looked back on his time at HSV.
European U21 champion and 143 competitive appearances for HSV
Jung moved to Hamburg from Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in 2014. Initially, he played in the second team and made 23 appearances in his debut season in 2014/15, scoring two goals. However, due to his good performances, he was promoted to the Bundesliga squad the following season and went on to make his debut against FC Bayern Munich on 14th August 2015 on Matchday 1 of the 2015/16 season. After this, Jung made 18 further appearances in his debut season. In total, Jung played 78 Bundesliga matches, 10 DFB-Pokal matches, and 55 Bundesliga 2 matches for HSV and was deployed both at centre-back and in defensive midfield.
The German-Ghanaian celebrated his greatest success at the 2017 European U21 Championship, when Germany U21s won the tournament under coach Stefan Kuntz. He made a total of four appearances and played 80 minutes of the semi-final against England in the competition.
Now it is time to look to the future and to write new success stories elsewhere. Everyone at HSV would like to thank Gideon for seven years at the club and wish him all the best for the future. Take care, Gidi!
