Friendly against Salzburg ends in 4-1 defeat
HSV suffered a 4-1 defeat against the reigning Austrian champions, with die Rothosen’s only goal coming from Immanuel Pherai.
More than 1,000 fans were in attendance as Hamburger SV lost 4-1 to Red Bull Salzburg in the second friendly of their training camp in Austria on Saturday morning (15th July).
Playing in front of chairman Jonas Boldt and club manager Bernd Wehmeyer in around 30-degree heat, HSV made a good start to the game. Donning their brand-new away kit, Levin Öztunali made a breakthrough on the left flank, but his cross into the centre didn’t find anyone (3’). Debutant Dennis Hadzikadunic and captain Ludovit Reis both stuck out a leg to extinguish the first Salzburg attack (6’), but keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes was helpless just two minutes later when Karim Konate, who found himself in acres of space in the penalty box, converted a cross that came in from the left to make it 1-0 to the Austrian champions (8’). Shortly afterwards, Salzburg combined well up the right flank and put their next cross into box, which Hadzikadunic unfortunately deflected into his own net for 2-0 (13’). Jonas Meffert and his teammates then tried to calm things down, but a sensational long-range effort from Amankwah Forson curled into the left corner as Salzburg scored their third right in the middle of the first half (23’). Despite the unfavourable scoreline, HSV didn’t give up and capitalised on a defensive error from Salzburg as Immanuel Pherai got one back for die Rothosen (31’). Konate then hit the post from close range at the other end (35’) and Moritz Heyer tried his luck from distance (43’) in what were the final two highlights of the first half.
An even contest in the second half
Matheo Raab started in goal for die Rothosen in the second half, and Elijah Krahn and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer took the place of Jonas Meffert and Bakery Jatta. Tim Walter’s side saw more of the ball after the break but were caught on the counter after 55 minutes as Dorgeles Nene scored Salzburg’s fourth. As legs became increasingly heavy following an intense few days of the training camp, it didn’t get much easier for HSV, but they kept going and almost scored a second following some nice attacking play from Krahn and Pherai to set up Robert Glatzel (60’). Pherai went on to fire a free-kick underneath the wall but directly into the side netting (64’). The match became an even contest at this stage. HSV then strung together a long series of passes before Öztunali eventually had a go, narrowly missing the target (72’). Both teams seemed tired after what had been a relative fast-paced game, having similar fortunes in the midfield areas. No more big chances would follow, therefore it finished 4-1 to Salzburg.
