Eventful 3-3 draw against Viktoria Plzen
HSV drew 3-3 in an entertaining friendly against Viktoria Plzeň as part of their training camp in Austria on Friday (7th July).
Hamburger SV played out a 3-3 draw against Czech opponents FC Viktoria Plzeň on Friday evening (7th July) as part of their training camp in Austria. On what was a lovely evening for football, Robert Glatzel, Levin Öztunali and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer scored for The Rothosen in front of the 1,100 in attendance at the Waldstadion Westendorf.
Debuting the new kit, head coach Tim Walter’s side looked to get forward early on. They were finding some success down the flanks, or more specifically through Levin Öztunali (R) and Jean-Luc Dompe (L). However, bombing down the wings in this fashion left them a little exposed at the back, which resulted in goalkeeper and captain Daniel Heuer Fernandes being called into action on two occasions. First, the keeper punched a cross from the right-hand side away from the six-yard box (5’), and then he won his first one-on-one battle two minutes later. Shortly after this, Lukas Kalvach had a go from long range, but he fired high over the HSV goal (9’), and Rafiu Durosinmi also headed over from a corner in the 12th minute.
HSV score a quickfire double, Plzeň reply with a goal of their own
Following this period, HSV did get to see more of the ball, but struggled to neatly work the ball out from the back against the high-pressing Czech side. Therefore, the spectators had to wait a little while before the next goal-scoring opportunity came. Öztunali crossed in from the right towards Robert Glatzel at the back post, and the striker nodded it back towards the centre of the box for Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, who unfortunately was unable to get on the end of it (29’). The HSV fans had reason to celebrate two minutes later, however: Elijah Krahn’s brilliant through ball eventually found Immanuel Pherai after he used his body well to win possession. He then laid the ball off to Glatzel, who found himself alone in front of Plzeň keeper Jindrich Stanek’s goal. Stanek would illegally bring Glatzel to the ground to concede a penalty which was coolly converted by the striker halfway up the right corner of the goal to make it 1-0 (31’). Just three minutes later, Öztunali profited from some nice play from Glatzel to double HSV’s lead, scoring our second from close range (34’). He would then go on to foul Durosinmi shortly before the break, who then also converted the penalty he won past Heuer Fernandes to make it 2-1 (44’) by half time.
Exciting start to the second half
The second half began as hectically as the first one ended. Matheo Raab, who came on with Luis Seifert, Anssi Suhonen and Bakery Jatta, firstly saved a shot from a decent position. However, he had no chance with Tomas Chory’s rebound to make it 2-2 (53’). The Rothosen looked to regain the lead and did just that four minutes later. Öztunali played a lovely through ball for Königsdörffer and he kept his cool to beat Marian Tvrdon (57’). Both coaches continued to make regular changes and that somewhat affected the flow of the game. Königsdörffer missed an opportunity to give HSV a 4-2 lead after some good work by William Mikelbrencis and Jatta (71’). Viktoria Plzeň managed to level proceedings with seven minutes left to play via Matej Vydra’s low finish into the bottom corner, the final notable moment of this entertaining pre-season friendly.
