Entertaining 2-2 draw against Paderborn
Former HSV man Filip Bilbija’s two goals (46’, 60’) were cancelled out by Robert Glatzel (54’) and Davie Selke (67’) in an action-packed second half. Glatzel had a potential winning goal in injury time chalked off by VAR.
HSV had to settle for a point on matchday 6. Steffen Baumgart’s team drew 2-2 against his former club SC Paderborn on Saturday, 28th September. The 57,000 fans in attendance at a sold-out Volksparkstadion witnessed a cagey first half with no goals, however that changed after the break. Filip Bilbija quickly gave the visitors the lead (46’), only for Robert Glatzel to equalise shortly afterwards (54’). The former Hamburg player got his second of the afternoon after an hour played, but Davie Selke got the Rothosen back on level terms again (67’). An action-packed second half ended with Glatzel celebrating a winning goal in the second minute of injury time, however VAR ruled the goal out after the striker had touched the ball with his hand.
Few chances, no goals…
HSV coach Steffen Baumgart made four changes to the team that drew 2-2 away at Kaiserslautern last weekend. Balde and Hefti were replaced on the flanks by Katterbach and Sahiti, while Karabec and Selke were preferred to Richter and Königsdörffer in attack. It was the Hamburg defence that was in focus early on though, as Paderborn put together a few decent attacks early on to give the home fans some concerns.
Nevertheless, goalkeeper Raab was on hand on each occasion, with his teammates eventually gaining control of the game. From midway through the first half, the home team were camped in Paderborn’s half. Their goalkeeper Boevink was forced to make a number of saves to keep the scores level. HSV threatened in particular from Muheim’s corners and free-kicks, but Schonlau, Hadzikadunic, Glatzel and Selke all failed to get the better of Boevink. With HSV keeping things tight enough at the other end, the first half subsequently ended goalless.
...and an entertaining second half
Following the interval, the pace of the game picked up and the goals started to fly in. The first of which came just a minute after the restart: Paderborn got down the left wing and the ball came into the middle for Bilbija, who made no mistake and made it 1-0. It was a nightmare start to the second half for HSV, however Baumgart’s men kept their heads up and quickly levelled things. Karabec assisted the prolific Glatzel in the 55th minute for 1-1.
Both teams continued to push forward in search of more goals and ultimately the three points. Five minutes after Glatzel’s goal, Bilbija scored again, this time profiting from Raab’s failed attempt to clear the ball. The 24-year-old was able to lob it over Raab from around 25 yards out. HSV again rallied and equalised for the second time: Selke brilliantly headed in a cross from Katterbach. With both sides still trying to win the game, it looked as if the Rothosen had done so in the second minute of injury time when Glatzel scored from Balde’s cross. However, referee Badstübner chalked the goal off after VAR advised him Glatzel had handled the ball before scoring, thus denying HSV a third straight win at home.
