Benes and Jatta score in 2-0 home win over Magdeburg
Benes (9’) and Jatta (72’) score in front of 56,800 spectators at the Volksparkstadion as HSV continue their perfect home form.
HSV recorded their sixth consecutive home win with a 2-0 victory against 1. FC Magdeburg on Saturday in front of 56,800 spectators in the sold-out Volksparkstadion. Laszlo Benes’ early opener (9') was the only goal of an even first half, while Bakery Jatta doubled the lead in the 72nd minute to ensure HSV’s perfect home run continued as they moved back up to second place in the table.
Benes opens the scoring...
Tim Walter made a number of changes to the side that defeated Arminia Bielefeld on penalties in midweek, introducing Glatzel, Jatta and Heuer Fernandes for Nemeth, Öztunali and Raab, while Ambrosius replaced the injured Ramos (muscle problem) and Mickelbrencis also came into the side. The game was open from the first minutes, with Magdeburg not shying away and looking to dominate possession. Atik's cross caused danger for HSV early on (2'), but was well dealt with by Muheim, before Glatzel narrowly missed the target at the other end (8'). However, it did not take much longer for HSV to break the deadlock, with Benes rounding off a fantastic team move to put his side ahead (9'), finishing after Glatzel’s initial effort was blocked just in front of the goal line by defender Piccini. Ceka looked to reply for the away side but saw his effort go narrowly past the post (12’).
The rest of the first half was an even affair with few chances at either end. Shortly before half time, Glatzel's put an effort just wide (43'), while Heuer Fernandes saved a long-range effort from Atik (45') and Ambrosius dealt with a dangerous cross at the other end. As a result, HSV took a narrow 1-0 lead into half-time.
... and Jatta heads in
The second half began just as the first did, with both sides having chances to score. First, Benes hit a free kick just wide from around 20 metres (51'), before Magdeburg had chances to equalise through Schuler (54') and Bockhorn (55'). The visitors then began to control the game, with Hamburg unusually penned into their own half. Head coach Walter introduced Dompe and Poreba in response, but the away side continued to cause danger. Heuer Fernandes was again tested by a long-range shot, this time courtesy of Bockhorn (65').
HSV kept their composure despite Magdeburg’s period of dominance, at managed to double their lead on the counter. Substitute Dompe received the ball from Benes before running at Piccini and crossing to the far post, where Jatta headed past Reimann to make it 2-0 (72'). Benes almost made it 3-0 a minute later but headed his effort just wide. With the visitors two goals behind, the comeback became even more difficult when Elfadli was shown a red card (78'). With HSV on the road to victory, Nemeth (85’) and Dompe (89’) each had chances to extend the scoreline but could not take advantage. Despite that, the home side saw out the win, taking their home winning run to six games and marking 16 games unbeaten at the Volksparkstadion, while recording their fifth home clean sheet in a row
