4-1 win at home to finish off the season
The Rothosen ran out 4-1 winners at home to 1. FC Nürnberg on the final day. The club set a new average attendance record at the Volksparkstadion too in the process.
Hamburger SV won their final game of the 2023/24 season 4-1 against 1. FC Nürnberg thanks to a Glatzel hat-trick and a goal from Poreba in the first half. 57,000 fans were at a sold-out Volksparkstadion, setting a new club record average attendance of 55,906, beating the previous best from 2006/07. Glatzel’s third goal, which came from the spot in injury time, sealed the 12th home win of the campaign, another new club record.
Glatzel with a brace...
HSV coach Steffen Baumgart had to make changes to the centre of his defence for the final day. Schonlau and Hadzikadunic were replaced by Ambrosius and Ramos. The latter could only watch on as Goller looked to have made it 1-0 after just three minutes, however the goal didn’t stand due to an offside in the build-up. This fast start by the visitors just showed that they, like HSV, were well up for the final game of the season.
The hosts went ahead instead in the sixth minute after some effective pressing saw Marquez’s misplaced pass intercepted by Glatzel. The prolific striker was as clinical as ever and gave HSV the lead. It was an open game in the first half and both teams looked to get the ball forward. Nürnberg found an equaliser after around a quarter of an hour. Hofmann’s cross from the right was headed in by Schleimer. HSV were not affected by this setback and continued to play nice some stuff. Glatzel narrowly missed the chance to make it 2-1, but his header from Dompe’s cross in the 22nd minute set it up for Poreba and he made no mistake from close range. Baumgart’s team continued to press forward in search of further goals and got a third in the 28th minute. This time, Muheim did really well to assist Glatzel for his second of the afternoon. The HSV fans at a sold-out Volksparkstadion got to enjoy a great first half of football in what was referee Aarnink’s final ever game in the role.
...and then the last goal of the season
The second half began somewhat slowly until HSV found their mojo again shortly afterwards. The home side almost got a fourth goal in the 57th minute, before Nürnberg came close eight minutes later, only for Ramos to block Goller’s shot wide for a corner (65’).
The Hamburg defence was solid in the second half and kept a clean sheet after the break. It was Ramos again who helped keep FCN out, combining with Katterbach and Raab in the 86th minute to deny Hungbo’s two opportunities. While the Rothosen didn’t create as many chances in the second half, that didn’t affect the excellent atmosphere at the Volksparkstadion, which only got better in injury time. Glatzel won a penalty and scored it himself, ensuring that he finished the season as the league’s joint-top goalscorer alongside Hertha’s Tabakovic and Düsseldorf’s Tzolis on 22 goals.
