2:4 - HSV lose in Karlsruhe
Hamburger SV lost the away game at Karlsruher SC with 2:4. Nebel, Jensen and Schleusener gave the Badeners a clear lead, a Glatzel brace was ultimately not enough for a comeback.
On Sunday (12 March), HSV lost its matchday 24 away match at Karlsruher SC with 2:4. In front of 26,000 spectators at the sold-out Wildpark, Nebel (10th), Jensen (17th) and Schleusener (32nd) gave the hosts a clear lead in the first half of the match, while a brace from Robert Glatzel (50th/80th) added to the suspense. The yellow card for Javi Montero (87th) and the second goal by Schleusener (89th) put an end to the hopes of the Rothosen. To make matters worse, HSV head coach Tim Walter was shown the red card shortly before the end.
A half of a game like in the wrong film ...
Compared to the convincing 3-0 home win against 1. FC Nürnberg (4 March), HSV head coach Tim Walter had to change his starting eleven in one position: Captain Sebastian Schonlau suffered an ankle injury during the training week and did not make it into the matchday squad, his position in central defence was taken by Moritz Heyer. Noah Katterbach, who was convincing against the club, was again given the starting eleven as a right-back.
The newly formed four-man defence was directly tested with a few long balls in the opening phase, but initially withstood the pressure. At least until the 10th minute, when Paul Nebel gave the hosts the lead with the first chance of the game. The conceded goal visibly left its mark on the Redosen, which was deepened in the 17th minute. KSC midfielder Leon Jensen only had to push the ball over the line after an individual assist from former HSV player Mikkel Kaufmann and thus made the false start of Walter's charges perfect. Even after the two blows, HSV did not manage to turn the game around, instead the Karlsruhe side twice missed a possible decisive goal, with the aluminium even coming to the rescue of the Hamburg side, who were reeling in this phase. In the 32nd minute, however, any support came too late, because after another individual lapse in the HSV defence, Fabian Schleusener was able to mark the 3:0 from close range. This was the score going into the dressing room.
... and an uncapped comeback
The HSV performance was reminiscent of the furious comeback in Heidenheim (Matchday 20, 3:3 after 0:3): With the courage of desperation, Robert Glatzel reduced the almost unassailable deficit just five minutes after the change of ends. After that, however, the game calmed down very abruptly, which was naturally inconvenient for the Rothosen in particular. The Badeners, on the other hand, deliberately broke the rhythm of the game around the hour mark, thus ensuring that Hamburg's phase of pressure subsided. However, the latter then experienced a new lease of life around ten minutes before the end of the game, as Glatzel laced a brace after a buttery Muheim cross, bringing hopes of a renewed comeback closer. However, this was decisively thwarted just three minutes before the end of normal time by the yellow card for Javi Montero, as the resulting hole in the last defensive line was exploited by Schleusener in the 89th minute to make it 4:2 and thus set the final score. To make matters worse, HSV head coach Tim Walter, of all people, was shown the red card at his old place of work, which rounded off an overall used HSV day in a negative sense.
