2-2 Draw at Fortuna Düsseldorf
Benes gave Hamburg an early lead before Kownacki and Klaus turned the game around in the first half. An own goal by Klarer finally brough an equaliser.
Hamburger SV drew 2:2 (1:2) with Fortuna Düsseldorf on Friday evening (31 March) in the away leg of the 26th Second Division matchday. In the sold-out Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf with a crowd of 52,200, the Hamburg team took an early lead through Benes (5th) in front of more than 15,000 HSV fans. The hosts then turned the game around with a double strike by Kownacki (21st) and Klaus (28th). In the second half, HSV deserved to equalise through an own goal by Klarer (76th) to make it 2:2 and, after Montero was sent off (89th), they managed to finish the game with a point.
Goal-filled start ...
Compared to the 0-0 draw against Holstein Kiel, HSV coach Tim Walter made four changes to the starting line-up: Instead of Sebastian Schonlau (yellow suspension), Jonas David, Jean-Luc Dompe and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer (all on the bench), Javi Montero, Noah Katterbach, Sonny Kittel and Laszlo Benes started in a 3-5-2 formation. The latter was the focus of attention after a few minutes when he took responsibility for a penalty caused by Robert Glatzel: The Slovakian failed with his penalty kick against goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier, but put the follow-up shot into the goal from close range - 1:0 (5th).
With the early lead behind them, Hamburg initially set the tone before they were also caught cold by a standard situation: Dawid Kownacki headed in a free-standing corner from Felix Klaus to equalise 1-1 (21). Seven minutes later, the provider of the assist added his own name to the list of scorers when he raced into the penalty area after a Hennings header had been extended and then scored the perfect goal to make it 2-1. After that, both sides went back and forth with more chance coming from Matthias Zimmermann which Daniel Heuer Fernandes scrambled out of the corner (36th).
... and a wild final phase
After the break, the Rothosen tried to continue where they had left off before the whistle: They repeatedly played into the last third of the game with pressure and combination confidence, without initially generating the decisive power in the form of goals. Afterwards, the game shifted more and more to midfield, where both teams received two yellow cards each for intense duels, before Tim Walter brought fresh wind into the game with Anssi Suhonen around the hour mark. The lively Finn brought out a free-kick, which Sonny Kittel took with the best HSV chance of the second half, but found his master in Kastenmeier. The resulting corner also brought a top chance, which Meffert, standing free in the penalty area after a good variation, just missed (72.). Two minutes later, HSV equalised at the third attempt: a fine combination via Reis, Glatzel and Kittel was tapped into the net by F95 centre-back Christoph Klarer (74) - 2:2!
Kittel, who had decisively forced the own goal to make it 2:2, almost ensured the 3:2 lead minutes later, but put his shot just past the goal (77.). It was the starting signal for a wild final quarter of an hour, in which both teams played for victory due to the league situation and both coaches brought in fresh personnel with further changes. Javi Montero, on the other hand, was sent off with a second yellow card in the 89th minute. In the five minutes of stoppage time, the Hamburg side was outnumbered and had Daniel Heuer Fernandes to thank for keeping the upper hand in a one-on-one duel with substitute Daniel Ginczek (90.+3). It was the final point of a wild top game that ultimately deserved no winner and a share of points.
