2-1 loss in friendly match against Eredivisie club FC Volendam
The friendly match against the Dutch first-division side FC Volendam ended in a 2-1 loss for HSV, with substitute Luis Seifert scoring the only goal for the Rothosen.
On Wednesday (6th September), Hamburger SV played a friendly match against the Dutch top-flight side FC Volendam, which ended in a 2-1 loss for HSV. However, the result was not the most essential matter of course; it was much more important for HSV coach Tim Walter to use the international break to give game time to the players who have not yet managed to get as many minutes on the pitch. The Hamburger SV players had the opportunity to play against a quality opponent in FC Volendam, coached by the German Matthias Kohler, who achieved promotion to the Eredivisie in 2022 and avoided relegation last season.
FCV showed that their squad is full of quality in this friendly match, barely allowing the Rothosen a dangerous shot on goal in the first half, despite HSV being the superior side in this period of the game. Levin Öztunali had the best chance of the first half following two long-range shots by Immanuel Pherai, but Hamburger SV were already 1-0 down by that point. The attacker Lequincio Zeefuik, brother of Hertha’s Deyovaisio Zeefuik, set up the visitors' goal to go 1-0 up after around half an hour through Robert Mühren. Mühren also scored FCV’s second goal shortly before the break with a controversial penalty kick.
After the break, HSV played with more urgency and created two huge chances through a half-time substitute, left winger Miro Muheim, in the form of two efforts against the bar. A quarter of an hour before the end, HSV got one back. Substitute Luis Seifert converted following a Pherai corner to make it 2-1, but despite a period of pressure in the closing stages and some well played-out chances, the Rothosen could not find an equaliser. Nevertheless, this match provided a very good test for HSV during the international break. Tim Walter also saw it as such: “The result is secondary to me. For me it’s about what the lads are showing. And I was happy with what I saw. We didn’t score the goals we should have, but despite that it was a decent performance from my team and all in all a good test.”
