1-1 home draw against 1. FC Nürnberg
HSV remain undefeated at the Volksparkstadion in 2024/25, after a 1-1 draw against 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday afternoon. The Rothosen took the lead through Daniel Elfadli, before FCN's Mahir Emreli netted the equaliser in the second half.
Hamburger SV were held to a 1-1 draw at home against 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday (3rd November). A sold-out crowd of 57,000 at the Volksparkstadion saw the hosts take the lead in the 15th minute through Elfadli, before the visitors managed to gain a stronger foothold on the match. FCN travelled to Hamburg on the back of a three-game winning run in the league and were able to net a deserved equaliser in the second half through Emreli. HSV had opportunities to retake the lead in the closing minutes of the match, but were unlucky to be denied by the post. Nürnberg, for their part, met their match in goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes as he ensured that HSV would extend their unbeaten run on home soil to six matches.
Elfadli opens the scoring in style
HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart was forced to make several adjustments to his squad, with Dennis Hadzikadunic, Silvan Hefti, Emir Sahiti, Robert Glatzel and Valon Zumberi all out injured. Additionally, Sebastian Schonlau and Jonas Meffert were both suspended for the match. The head coach then needed to make another change to his team 30 minutes into the match, as Ludovit Reis was unable to continue due to adductor issues. No easy situation for Baumgart and his side to manage – especially given the strong run of form that Nürnberg have been on recently. The Rothosen started well and were able to keep FCN from creating many chances, while also looking to be clinical up front. As a result, Hamburg found themselves 1-0 ahead after the opening quarter of an hour thanks to a well-worked goal originating in midfield. Elfdali won possession in HSV's half and combined with Adam Karabec for a quick one-two, before powering home a shot from just outside the box (15'). The hosts were then tasked with keeping Nürnberg's attack, which had scored 15 goals across their last three league games, at bay. Heuer Fernandes came up big shortly before the break, with two strong saves to deny Stefanos Tzimas to preserve HSV's lead at half-time.
Heuer Fernandes to the rescue
The second half continued in similar fashion in front of the 57,000 spectators: FCN pushed for a goal, but Heuer Fernandes refused to let them through. Within just ten minutes of the restart, the Hamburg goalkeeper had denied Tzimas, Justvan and Emreli, not to mention Elfadli’s goal-line clearance against Tzimas. After Heuer Fernandes pulled off a double save against Emreli to rescue HSV once more on the hour-mark, Nürnberg had racked up eight shots in the second half compared to the hosts’ one. Unfortunately, it was shot number nine that brought about the visitors’ inevitable equaliser in the 63rd minute. Emreli finished off another dangerous FCN attack led by Tzimas, picking out the top corner. It served as a wake-up call for Steffen Baumgart’s side though, who began putting up better resistance against Nürnberg’s charge and started to create a few chances of their own. Selke and Balde both had decent opportunities, but didn’t come quite as close to a winner as Richter in the 83rd minute, whose thunderous strike had goalkeeper Reichert beaten only to crash back off the post. Neither team was content to with just a point going into the closing stages, and it was Hamburg who had the final chance through Perrin’s shot into the side netting, but in the end, both sides had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
