1-0 win in Hamburg derby
Hamburger SV celebrated a deserved victory at home against FC St. Pauli thanks to a strong performance and despite having two goals ruled out and hitting the woodwork twice. The winning goal came courtesy of Robert Glatzel.
Hamburger SV claimed a 1-0 victory in the 111th Hamburg derby against FC St. Pauli on Friday evening (3/5). In an exciting game that was dramatic at times and appropriately celebrated at full time, HSV were the better team and got a late, but deserved winner in the 85th minute when a Robert Glatzel header sent the sold-out Volksparkstadion into ecstasy. Before then, the home side had seen two goals retrospectively disallowed, whilst Königsdörffer and Pherai also struck the post and the bar respectively. This meant for even more jubilant celebrations amongst the team and the fans, who enthusiastically supported their team from the first to the last whistle, carrying the team to victory.
HSV with chances...
HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart, who already knew he would be without Benes for this game, then had to deal with the loss of Jatta at the last minute, because he picked up an injury in the warm-up and had to withdraw from the squad. This meant that the HSV players with the most experience in this derby were absent as referee Jöllenbeck blew his whistle to kick off the 111th Hamburg derby. The atmosphere was breath-taking thanks to the frenetic fans, as both sides got straight down to business. The wild start to the game culminated in Pherai firing the first threatening shot in the eighth minute as he forced Vaslij into his first save.
The next decent chance then fell to the home side, who were applying the early pressure onto St. Pauli. After winning the ball high up the pitch in the 19th minute, HSV launched a rapid counterattack, but both Glatzel and Königsdörffer were denied on the goal line by Mets. If it had got a lot louder at the Volksparkstadion in this instant, then what happened five minutes later caused the stadium to formally erupt. After being played through by Pherai, Glatzel went through on goal and finished to make it 1-0. However, these celebrations were short lived, because Jöllenbeck had the goal chalked off due to a foul committed by Glatzel on Saliakas in the build-up to the goal. There was certainly contact, but it wasn’t a foul – this also could have been the verdict of the referee, particularly as it wasn’t clear who initiated this contact. Despite that, Jöllenbeck stuck with his decision, and so it remained 0-0. Following this wake-up call, the visiting side, who, just as their opponents were doing, looked to control both the ball and the game, found their way into the game a bit more. HSV stayed compact in defence, so the league leaders were unable to fashion many chances, and they would go on to count themselves lucky once again in the 36th minute. Pherai’s cross into the box sailed over Vaslij, landing behind the St. Pauli keeper and at the feet of Königsdörffer, who hit it first time and struck the right post. Eggestein and Afolayan both tried their luck before half time, but the first 45 minutes had, on the whole, belonged to HSV. They did, however, have nothing to show for this, and given the good chances they created and that the almost took the lead through Glatzel, there was more in it for the home side.
…and then with the winning goal
The second half started less wild than the first one had ended, but this supposed calmness to the game only lasted briefly. After measuring up their opposition in the opening minutes after the break, HSV retook control of the game – and found themselves celebrating for the second time that night. On the hour mark, Muheim swung in a cross to the far post, where Königsdörffer headed it over Vaslij into the far corner and prompted wild celebrations in the home end once again.
There was then a VAR check as Jöllenbeck reviewed what had happened, and he decided to disallow the goal because Poreba had blocked St. Pauli’s keeper. The second goal HSV had scored tonight had been chalked off, and emotions were subsequently running high, something which became evident on the pitch, as the match became considerably more physical. There was still nice football being played, however – and at this time, it was very much a one-way game. HSV were in control and kept searching for a goal, whilst FC St. Pauli stood compact and tried to keep the home side away from their goal, looking threatening on the counter. HSV remained the more threatening side, however, as they hit the woodwork for the second time in the game ten minutes from the end, with Pherai’s free kick cannoning off the crossbar. HSV didn’t let being denied by the frame of the goal and by the referee twice get them down and continued to push forward in search of a winner. They then got their reward in the 85th minute when Glatzel came on top in an aerial duel and headed the ball into the back of the net to finally make it 1-0. On this occasion, there was nothing to contest, and so the Volksparkstadion could erupt into celebration. This huge celebratory moment and wave of euphoria carried both players and fans to the end of the match together. In added time, Okugawa even had a great chance for a second, but he was fouled in the process, winning a penalty for the hosts. As Reis stepped up to take the spot kick, it went quiet for the first time at the Volksparkstadion, you could hear a penny drop – and it would stay that way for a few seconds after the penalty, because Vaslij saved the attempt, which also meant HSV had to withstand the final moments of the game with just a one-goal lead. But they did this convincingly and secured a deserved derby-day win, which was then appropriately celebrated by the entire ground.
