HSV brush Aue aside for statement win at the top
Goals from Wintzheimer, Kittel and Narey gave HSV a deserved win at the Volksparkstadion.
Hamburger SV's pace, pressing and finishing was too much for Erzgebirge Aue to handle at the Volksparkstadion on Wednesday evening (21st October), as Daniel Thioune's side moved back to the top of the standings in the 2. Bundesliga with a thumping 3-0 win. The Rothosen went into the break ahead after a powerful first 45 minutes, smothering Aue for long periods and getting the opener in the 17th minute through Manuel Wintzheimer. The Violets improved after the break but HSV struck back through Kittel and Narey to take the game away from their guests and secure the best-ever start to a HSV season in the process, with four wins from four in the league.
Wintzheimer caps powerful HSV start with opener
Daniel Thioune made a number of tactical and personnel changes, switching up from a 4-5-1 system from the 1-0 success over Fürth the previous Saturday to a 3-5-2, with Jatta, Kittel and Ambrosius coming in for the rested Onana, the injured Dudziak and the suspended Leistner. The visitors had problems to adjust to this new formation, Kittel and Jatta in particular enjoying a lot of space to find their way into the game. The Violets were barely able to gain a foothold in the opening exchanges, rushed and harried whenever the Rothosen relinquished the ball, forced to play long, inaccurate balls that ended up back with their hosts. The pressure had been high but the opening goal in the 17th minute was the Rothosen's first effort on Martin Männel's goal, a beautiful team move putting Hamburg into the lead. The play was switched to Sonny Kittel, who backheeled leisurely into the path of Khaled Narey, striding forward and striking a sumptuous ball across the face of Männel's goal, which Wintzheimer merely had to tap in at the far post.
The pressure relented around the half-hour mark, Aue's passing becoming more accurate and energy possibly lacking from the Rothosen given their earlier exertions. Given the Violets' territorial gains, Sven Ulreich remained untested and towards the end of the half the hosts could have extended their lead. Bakery Jatta's pace and directness was proving too much for the guests' defence, a sharp delivery from the Gambian just evading Simon Terodde and cleared with little conviction by Cacutalua at the back post. Khaled Narey continued where he had left off in Fürth, proving a nuisance all half, and should have doubled his goal tally for the season three minutes before the break, turning and taking the ball with him beautifully in one motion, only to hit his effort straight at Männel. The Rothosen went into the break deservedly in the lead.
Kittel and Narey seal the deal
Aue coach Dirk Schuster was unhappy with his side's first-half showing, replacing key players Pascal Testroet and Jan Hochscheidt at the half. The double change initially paid dividends, Aue starting the second period strongly, the Rothosen taking time to get into their stride before doubling their lead in the 57th minute. Manuel Wintzheimer had gone close just two minutes earlier and turned provider for the second, driving into the penalty area and taking three Aue defenders with him, opening up room for Sonny Kittel behind him to fire into the far corner with his left from 12 yards out. After an initial burst to start the half, the second goal seemed to take the wind out of the Aue sails, unable to keep possession and constantly playing the ball out of play rather than finding their man.
The game was all but over as a contest 18 minutes from time, as Aaron Hunt was fouled just outside the Aue 18-yard area. Hunt himself stepped up, his curling effort helped onto the post by Männel, which meant it merely landed at the feet of Khaled Narey seven yards out, who placed into the unguarded net for his second strike in as many games. With the result secure, the pressure eased from the hosts and Aue saw more of the ball in the closing stages, yet were only able to test Sven Ulreich on one occasion through Rizzuto, the HSV 'keeper enjoying a very quiet evening. Daniel Thioune will be hoping his team can repeat the trick on Saturday at home to Würzburger Kickers (kick-off 1:00pm CET).
