HSV with dominant 4-1 win against Münster
The Rothosen celebrated a first home win of the season in this clash with a fellow founding member of the Bundesliga thanks to a brace from Robert Glatzel and further goals from Daniel Elfadli and Moritz Heyer.
Hamburger SV won 4-1 at home on 2. Bundesliga matchday 4 against SC Preußen Münster. In front of a sell-out crowd of 57,000 fans at the Volksparkstadion on Saturday (31st August), the Rothosen started with purpose and were goal hungry. At half time they had already taken a 3-0 lead with goals from Robert Glatzel (7’, 45’+1’) and Daniel Elfadli (26’). After half time, HSV lost a bit of control and conceded to make it 3-1 with a goal from Torge Paetow (57’), before substitute Moritz Heyer (62’) extended the lead once again, meaning a 4-1 HSV home win.
Baumgart with a golden touch ...
Head coach Steffen Baumgart made three changes to the starting eleven who lost 1-0 in Hannover, with captain Schonlau suspended and Reis and Selke dropping to the bench. They were replaced by Elfadli who had recovered from injury alongside Balde and Glatzel. These latter two were immediately involved in the first goal only a few moments later, with Balde crossing from the left-hand side and the reigning Zweitliga top-scorer heading home from close range to make it 1-0 (7’). Glatzel celebrated his goal with a Mario Vuskovic shirt and with that reflected the dominant mood in the Volksparkstadion about this incident involving the Croatian defender: one of united support. Newly-promoted Münster were dangerous in the opening stages with crosses into the box, with Grodowski’s low shot (2’) and Frenkert’s header (14’) narrowly missing the HSV goal. The Rothosen once again found the target at the other end: After both Balde (22’) and Glatzel (24’) had failed to beat Münster ’keeper Schenk, who made brilliant saves, Elfaldi volleyed a Muheim corner into the net, a first HSV goal for the summer new signing.
Steffen Baumgart had already shown a golden touch in the inclusion of goalscorers Glatzel and Elfadli, as well as Balde who picked up an assist and was lively throughout. He could also be pleased with the overall performance of his side, who not only controlled the game but also showed the clarity in attack asked for by the head coach. But Münster also played solidly away from home in spells and looked dangerous with two sharp crosses into the box, with Muheim (40’) clearing off the line, before Paetow (41’) found himself unable to head home. At the other end, the Rothosen showed their clinical side once again just before half time, with Glatzel finding the target for a second time after an assist from his strike-partner Königsdörffer – 3-0 at half time!
... and important changes
The second half began without any changes for either side, but Münster started more alertly and registered three shots at goal. Grodowski (46‘, 51‘) had a couple of shots, the first harmless and the second testing Heuer Fernandes, while Amenydio (47’) fired over the crossbar from distance. Having had a number of chances, the guests deserved to pull one goal back and it came in the 57th minute, with centre-back Paetow heading a Lorenz corner home to make it 3-1. Baumgart reacted to this passive first 15 minutes of the second half with a triple change: Selke, Reis and Heyer came on for Glatzel, Pherai and Elfadli. The 52-year-old head coach showed good instincts once again, with the latter of this trio scoring immediately after his substitution to make it 4-1, with Heyer slightly unconventionally put the ball into the back of the net with his chest at the back post following yet another Muheim corner (64’).
Having made it 4-1, the Rothosen settled down and played with clarity and control, while also pulling the plug on any ambitions Münster had to mount a comeback. After that, the game fizzled out slightly without notable goalmouth action at either end. Both head coaches brought on fresh legs in the close stages. For HSV, new signing Richter made his debut, while vice-captain Reis took over the captain’s armband from Meffert and was involved between both goals. In late summer conditions, the game heated up again in the closing stages, with substitutes Richter (90+1’) and Deters (90+3’) not managing to extend the lead with efforts from within the box. The final whistle from referee Daniel Siebert, who didn’t give out any cards throughout the match, sealed HSV’s first home win of the 2024/25 season.
