Tom Mickel extends his contract with HSV
Goalkeeper Tom Mickel, who first joined Hamburger SV in 2009, has agreed to extend his contract which was set to expire this summer.
Tom Mickel is set to spend another year at HSV, where he's been since 2009, with the exception of a two-season spell at Greuther Fürth in the middle of his career at the Rothosen. "I'm thrilled that the club still values me so highly," said the 35-year old goalkeeper, who sees his role within the team as more than just the man between the sticks. "It's my responsibility, as the oldest player in the squad, to step up to the mark every single day." Mickel has been with the Rothosen for 15 years, so has naturally taken on an important role within the team, which includes acting as a link between the first team and development squad.
Mickel was originally signed for the reserves aged 20 back in 2009, having previously won the U19 European Championships with Germany. The goalkeeper, who came through Energie Cottbus’ academy, then became a permanent fixture of the first-team squad from 2011. Following a two-year spell with SpVgg Greuther Fürth (2013-2015), he returned to the Volkspark to make his debut for the first team in May 2016 in the Bundesliga. Overall, Mickel has played two Bundesliga games, four second-division games and one DFB-Pokal match for the club, as well as 111 games for the reserves in the fourth division.
HSV’s director of professional football, Claus Costa, explained that Mickel’s true value to the side is down to a lot more than just appearances. “Tom is a figure who’s held in high regard by the team and the goalkeeper coaches. He gives it his all and wears his heart on his sleeve every day.” Mickel has also shown himself to be the model professional, bouncing back and returning to the side following a number of injuries, including broken ribs and shoulder operations, thanks to his incredible willpower and desire to train. As a result, Mickel is, and will continue to be, viewed as a fantastic role model for younger players. The veteran expressed his anticipation ahead of the 2024/25 campaign: “I’m really looking forward to getting down to business again and giving it my all to help the club achieve our goal next season.”
