"We need to talk about it"
HSV returned home empty-handed after a 4-2 defeat against SV Elversberg, which both the players and the head coach spoke said was deserved. Despite a solid opening 30 minutes, the Rothosen weren't able to build on their strong performances from recent weeks.
Davie Selke: We started well and then managed to take a 1-0 lead. Up until then, everything was going as planned. The goal we conceded in the first half came from a solid bit of solo play, otherwise we were firmly in control. We wanted to keep giving it everything we had in the second half, but were then unfortunate to concede twice because we didn't remain as compact at the back. We need to talk about why we aren't managing to defend opposition attacks until the end. Our goal to make it 3-2 came at a good time, but then came the red card, which led to them being able to make it 4-2 at the end as we had committed everyone forward to attack.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: Unfortunately, we have to call it a deserved defeat. We started well and took the lead, but then lost our way. Our opponents had more of the ball and we weren't aggressive enough. Going into the break tied at 1-1 was okay, but we then didn't do enough in the second half. Across the pitch, there was far too little to be seen of what we wanted to show. We need to work on this and want to show a different face to ourselves as soon as possible.
"...there was no evidence of that today." - Steffen Baumgart
Steffen Baumgart, HSV head coach: I'm finding it difficult to find the right words. We started well into the match and played well up until the 30th minute, in my opinion. There were a lot of things that went well until then. From that point on, you could tell that the opponents were able to assert their control over the game and that we started to leave gaps, which then led to us conceding. At half time, we tried to address what we'd done well and especially that which we needed to do better at in order to be successful. Our defence and our attack just weren't at their best, it has to be said. We deservedly lost today. In my opinion, we've delivered a lot of strong performances over the last six, seven weeks and had made good progress, but there was no evidence of that today. I didn't see much evidence of that in the second half. That's what I tried to communicate to the lads after the game.
Horst Steffen, SVE head coach: We were forced to run a lot and defend at the start of the game due to how our opponents played. That was hard work and we also didn't allow them many clear-cut chances. Instead, we often made the wrong decision. Getting it back to 1-1 helped us and gave us momentum for the second half. We were able to force our opponents into giving up possession and to create chances far more often after the break. My compliments to the team. It was great, we had shots and were able to take advantage of our opponent's mistakes.
