Pherai tries his hand at coaching after intense training sessions on Wednesday
HSV’s players went to watch the basketball together at the Hamburg towers on Tuesday afternoon, but the focus was back on football the very next day.
Head coach Tim Walter held two intense sessions at the Volksparkstadion’s training pitches on Wednesday. A quick two hours of training in the morning were followed by a short lunch break in the changing rooms. Sebastian Schonlau and Anssi Suhonen were grinding away in the meantime, as they continued with their rehabilitation programmes, while Moritz Heyer (knee) and Gui Ramos (adductor) were assessed by medical staff. Ludovit Reis and Jean-Luc Dompe also sat out, as their workloads are being managed.
The team then got back to the grind in the afternoon. Despite being slightly shorter than the usual two hours, it was still a gruelling session which was compounded by the bad weather in Hamburg. It was dominated by a lot of tackling, constant challenges and a high level of intensity that never dipped. The head coach gave the team the evening off so they’d be able to save some energy for another round of training at 11:00 CEST on Thursday. After that, the team head into an international break weekend where they won’t have to train.
Immanuel Pherai and Elijah Krahn also hung around afterwards to run a session for around 40 youngsters from HSV’s football school. The youth players enjoyed playing with the pros. They got to know them a bit personally and even showed off a skill or two. Pherai gave the young players this piece of advice after some shooting drills that also rings true for the HSV players who trained twice today: “You’ve got to keep trying until you get it right - then you’ll really enjoy playing football.”
